Digging up an old one.....I'm giving serious consideration to either the Ayer or the Kukenam, but can't decide. Anyone slept with two people and a dog in the Ayer?

The Kukenam looks like it would be better suited for my wife and I with our 60lb boxer, but I'm not sure if the extra weight is worth it for the 1-2 trips a year we don't have a dog sitter and take him with us.

Long wait but worth it. Spent all day painting the bars, creating a hoist system then mounting it up. Now I can't wait to use it

Which one do you have? And how bad is the loss of rear visibility at that height?

Tepui Kukenam Sky Ruggedized. How much visibility is lost?.....all of it lol. But it doesn't bother me, I rarely use my rear view mirror anyway, except when I back up, but I use the rear view camera in the mirror, not the actual mirror. I did a lot of research on which bars and how much height I wanted and landed on this setup. Relentless Fab 8" bed bars (3). I wanted it the same height as the cab to reduce any drag. I did replace my plastic bed caps with KBVOODOO's flat steel ones. So I'm thinking on the factory plastic ones, you could expect about an inch more in height. I think any setup that doesn't put the tent higher than the cab will all but eliminate rear visibility out of the rear view mirror. Even if you did a mount that kept it at the same height as the bed I feel would still impede rear visibility. The tent closed is about 12", but with the ladder and the cover prob puts you at closer to 18" or so. That all said, I'm 100% content with this setup. Hope this helped

I know you posted this a while ago.
But I was in the same boat as you. I measured out on my floor the sleeping size of the Ayer, boxed it off, laid inside of it, and realized it will be tight for just my wife and I. A dog would make it uncomfortable. I went with the Kukenam. As soon as I set it up and got in it, I'm happy with my decision. I say Kukenam for 2 plus a dog.

If you are an REI member, you can have it delivered to your local REI for free. Plus if you are a member, you will receive 10% back. I paid 1400 for my Kukenam sky. Free shipping. And I'll be getting $140 back.

I understand that the material on the Ruggedized version is thicker and the bottom is diamond plated and stronger...I'm just wondering if anyone wants to chime in about their experience between the two? I really want the Ruggedized Kukenam but REI only has it in bright orange and it's about $600 more than the Kukenam Sky which has more color options. I'm hoping to use my REI dividend and their april sale to catch a good deal. I wanted the Ruggedized because I figured, why not get the most durable, best option...but now I'm wondering if it's overkill for my level of off roading. My plan is to go on more primitive trips this coming year, but I don't do much heavy duty rock crawling or anything super technical, don't have lockers, and I just like to cruise on fun dirt roads to nice scenic places... Just curious if my level of offroading (stuff like Lippincott, Laurel Lakes, some of the blue rated Big Bear runs, Imogene Pass, Alpine Loop, washboard Death Valley runs) warrants spending extra on the Ruggedized version. Thanks in advance!

I know we messaged each other... but I'm not sure what our level of off roading expierence has to do with which tent to buy. Im as noob as they come with wheeling. I too don't have lockers. I don't do hardcore crawling. But I love to camp and off road to my potential. I think your location and weather situations decides on which tent you get. Someone can chime in if they think off roading expierence deserves different tents. I'd like to know the facts if it does.

The description said it's more durable for 4x4 rigs. But I'm not sure what that has to do with the tent. Unless doing more hardcore wheeling is going to be detrimental to the frame or something? It's not like I'm going to be driving off road with the tent open so I'm not sure why it matters. Yes, can someone please chime in? Much appreciated!

With the 8" relentless bars, do the window props on the front window clear the cab?

I can guarantee they don't. With the allpro rack the tent stuck above the cab some and I still had to bend a rod to open the window

Well damn......Do you have a short bed or long bed?

I'm hoping a long bed gives enough wiggle room to slide the tent back enough to clear the rods. I really want to be able to get the window open and still clear the mast on my sailboat without having to unhitch the trailer at 2am when we roll into a regatta site.

I got my passenger side to clear, but both....no. I've seen people rig different things up to prop them open, but like I said, I got one corner of the cab side window to clear using one prop bar, and I figure for ventilation, that will be good enough. It's a great tent and great bed bars.
