Hello, lately i have been having problems with getting my taco in and out of 4WD and when it is in 4WD it "jumps". Does anyone know what this problem might be?

What happens when you try to go into 4HI while driving 20-40 mph?

That sounds normal to me. It's best to go into 4HI while driving. Every now and then I'll get a nice thud. Going from 4HI to 4LO you need to be stopped. Does it go into 4LO okay?

Any reason behind this? The extent of my trucks off-road use is on the beach so I am always going from 2HI all the way to 4Lo and I typically do this from a stand still. I've never had a problem like the OP mentioned, but I'm curious why it's "best" to go from 2Hi to 4Hi while moving.

Not sure about what the owners manual says but the 4HI gears mesh easier when you are moving. If stopped switching from 2HI to 4hi sometimes doesn't even go in.

Go from 2hi to 4hi while moving. Can do it at any speed up to I think about 60 mph, but no reason to be in 4X4 above about 20-25 mph. AFTER you get it into 4hi stop the truck. Place an automatic in Neutral or Park, then shift to 4lo. With a manual you can go to neutral, but just pressing in the clutch works too. Wait for the dash to light up telling you you are in 4lo. Put it back in gear and drive. DO NOT try to go straight from 2hi to 4lo. You won't break anything, but it is just a lot easier to shift into 4hi first. This is probably what is causing the sound you hear as it shifts into 4X4 and low range at the same time.

Getting it out of 4lo can be difficult and this is common with a lot of 4X4 vehicles. Stop the vehicle, place in neutral and shift to 4hi. Do not try to go straight to 2hi. If the 4lo light does not change to 4hi within a few seconds put it in reverse and try backing up 10-15 feet. Try again. You may have to repeat moving in reverse and forward 10-15' several times before it shifts into 4hi. Once you get it in 4hi start driving. After a few feet shift back to 2hi. It sometimes takes several seconds and will often shift back to 4X2 when you let off the accelerator slightly.

Are you on a loose surface? Even a hard packed dirt road can cause binding.

Strain on the drive train has been known to "thud", "thump", and feel like it "jumps" while switching from 2HI to 4HI and vice versa. I get it every now and then and I'll admit it makes me a little sad but as long as it's no premature component wear I am fine.

edit: I found best to be going under 10 while lightly feathering off throttle and switching usually gives best results. Sometimes it engages no problem sitting still though too and sometimes I have to creep before it engages. (obviously heavy 4x4'ing you don't have the luxury of killing momentum etc..)

It sounds to me like your in 4wd, probably on dry pavement, and trying to turn. As has been mentioned, that's the components of your system binding because there is no wheel slippage. Good rule of thumb for when to use 4wd, is if the surface will allow wheel slippage, you can use it.

I've edited my previous post, #11. Clearly a typo or brainfart on my part that I didn't catch before clicking "post reply" You cannot go from 2hi to 4lo on the move the way I originally posted. Sorry if that caused any confusion.

I have been told its the rear diff but i wonder if front hubs are an issue. Its on pavement, grass, mud, snow, u name it, it will do it. Like i said its a "skippy" or "jumpy" feeling. Sorry for the lack of good adjectives but thats the best way to describe it.

When I bought my truck new to me, the Previous owner had put two slightly different sized tires on and it would bind up really bad on all surfaces when in 4x4. Bought four new tires of the same size and problem is gone.

EDIT: not saying that is your issue but definitely something to check into... Also have seen binding issues in 4x4 with bent rear axle/ housing.
