I also don't get this obsession people have with 3rd Gens not being able to accelerate as fast as "this sports car" or "that other truck".
I have 0 issues accelerating to match freeway speeds before merging into traffic nor do i have problems passing people if necessary. I am also not trying to race anyone, if that's what i needed my vehicle to do then i would make sure to buy a vehicle that could handle that job.
I wouldn't buy a sports car and expect it to haul a load of rocks.

Totally agree with you. These trucks are plenty fast . In my younger days 8 cylinders didn’t have as much power . If you want to put things in perspective . A 1985 mustang GT with a 302 V8 and Roller rockers ( super fast for the day ) had 210 horsepower. And you needed to rev it high for it to go . People expect way too much . So now the Tacoma has a turbo , and tons of torque down low . Sounds great right ? 10 k oil changes also sounds great right ? Well 10 k oil changes and a turbo won’t look so good with a turbo after 100 k miles . This is just an assumption because it s too early to tell . But as an educated guess I don’t think it will be good . It’s too easy and don’t tell me that new engine won’t be under tons of stress , because it will be .

My Tacoma is gutless when merging on the freeway and is generally A bummer to drive. However, it's a truck that can haul my duck hunting gear reliably long distances, which is the intended use. Thankfully I have two other cars that run 0-60 under 4.5 seconds and a Jeep LJ for offroading.

I can get my taco up to 60mph in 7s. The rpms run really high and the engine and transmission really do some work. Everyone should do it once in a while, it's good for your engine they say.

What you noticed is def normal. I’ve found the truck takes a bit more on the gas pedal to get it moving/up to speed than my 2010 forester with its 4cyl 2.5, but once you hit it, she goes. It’s a 4500 pound N/A truck, not gonna be ripping up the streetz.

    Where's everyone going in such a hurry?

BTW, I drove a Volvo 240 wagon when I was in the Navy, so you'll never hear me bitch about acceleration.

But that is a ford... :puke: AND see below...

Trucks look extremely silly when the driver tries to go fast. I mean, really - what is the point of getting to the red light to wait there longer??? It is embarrassing to watch. It is a truck. Tacos drive best on the slow end of the 0-60 time scale off road, or carrying something.

If it was purchased as an autocross, or track car, well; the owner must somehow deserve that punishment.

OP - Look into getting a manual. It make it much more fun driving a slow Taco slow. I would not have purchased a Taco without a manual gearbox. (I'd shoot myself in an auto - but then I don't know how to drive an auto...)

I mean, I don't not agree with you. I feel silly doing it sometimes. It's usually off of a red light when I punch it. Especially on rural roads with speed limits at 55. Quite honestly I just like to hear the truck go vroom vroom:burnrubber:

0-60 only tells part of the story. The Tacoma's gearing and power under the curve makes it drive like a turd.

To actually answer the OPs question yes they are all that way but the earlier 3rd gens were even more so. It is normal. At low throttle the truck is optimizing for fuel efficiency, if you step on the throttle quickly it stops sipping and has plenty of power.

Truck’s ECU favours emissions reduction, mpgs and safety over performance when you press the throttle.

Truck makes it’s torque higher in the rpm range.

Not the best commuter vehicle. Off road with no cares in the world. Now you’re talking!

The software, had the OTT tune Installed. Really helped but doesn’t fix it completely.

The hardware, the tall gears and high rpm’s for torque is its weaker point.

Your driving experience may vary on how you drive. Most days it’s fine. Some days when you are fighting urban traffic it sucks.

Still wouldn’t trade it for anything else. Still look back with admiration at the truck while walking away. Cause when we hit the open road and make it to the back country this is where this truck really shines.

Dude, your 4.0 is anemic even on the paper. I drove your 4.0 in mountains and it was $h!t compared to 2gr-fks on oem calibration and extra gear

It's like you purposely picked the slowest cars on the market to own.

    Roller cam; not rockers.

Everyone keeps talking about 0-60 and not what people actually complain about. Its the normal around town driveability where you really feel the lack of low end power. Once the RPMs are up it makes enough power which is why the 0-60 is acceptable. You're only in the bottom half of the RPM window for a short period of that run.
