    Hello Everyone-

New to the site and my first post.

I drive a 2005 Toyota Tacoma access cab - manual - 2.7L - access cab. Love this truck to death...I named it 'Geronimo.'

Anyways, couple of years ago my catalytic converter was stolen (very common in Los Angeles, CA ). So I ended up going to a local shop for them to put an aftermarket (I didn't want my cc to get stolen again if I get an OEM). Now after two years, I need a smog check and apparently the aftermarket cc that I got is completely wrong and no one is passing me. Stupid part out of all this is that I should've filed a claim with my insurance long ago :frusty: cuz now they denied it...of course after 2 years, I don't blame them.

I can buy another aftermarket cc but checking CA's Air Resource Board website, aftermarket cc that is legal for my truck does not match the 'test group' code by one fkng letter. What I mean is, under my hood the test group code is: 5TYXT02.7NHM....and on the website legal aftermarket cc test group code is: 5TYXTO2.7NHH.

    Questions:

Can I still install the aftermarket cc on my truck?
What the hell are those last 3 letters mean?
What are the long term effects of doing this = > :frusty: ??

Thanks everyone. And it's Earth day so I want to get a proper catalytic converter.

I'm in a similar situation, I have the same truck (4x4) and I'm curious if the OP ever resolved this...

It looks like there are no aftermarket catalytic converters for test group code 5TYXT02.7NHM, only ...NHH. Since I'm in CA, my only LEGAL option is to pay the $1,600 for an OEM part. I've been researching for a while, and I haven't found any other online discussions about this problem. Does everyone else in CA with this pickup just bite the bullet and fork over the cash???

Now for the most important question:

If Toyota is the only manufacturer who can make a catalytic converter that "passes" smog for this pickup, then how come they're only charging a measly $1,600?

See if your VIN qualifies you for replacement.

    If not, it's only $1400 - not $1600.

If you're talking about the Toyota website's Lookup Safety Recall & Service Campaigns, then I've double-checked that...no free replacement there. Two independent shops quoted me for $1,600. I'll see what the dealer says when I take it in next week...

My invoice at the dealer was $1400.

This is my 3rd converter. Not sure what the bill for my first replacement was.

    I'm half kidding when I said "only $1400, not $1600," but $200 is $200.

I would get a quote from several dealerships.
