    Hi,

I need to test the fuel pump on my '96 Tacoma with the 2rz. I have heard that these Tacomas will not run the fuel pump unless the engine is cranking or the key is on start. Is that true?
If so, is it possible to get the fuel pump to run by removing the starter fuse and turning the key to START? Or does the engine have to be cranking?

Any way to jump power safely to the fuel pump to test?

there is no "prime" for the fuel pump. The motor has to be turning over either by the starter of running on its own for the fuel pump to operate. There is what Toyota refers to as a circuit opening relay that makes or breaks the electrical circuit to the fuel pump... it is under the dash and while it is a relay the wiring that makes it work comes directly from the ECM so I wouldn't go poking around with a jumper.

does your truck crank and not start? There are 3 fuses before the ignition switch and 2 after the ignition switch that could prevent her from cranking but not starting or not cranking at all.

The fuel pump will turn on when the key is in the start position. Not sure about the fuse, but pulling the starter relay should prevent the engine from cranking, but still turn on the fuel pump when you turn the key.

Ok, I ended up testing while the truck was cranking. Put the fuel pump in a pan of gas but no go. Found out all the connections are corroded and the pump was varnished solid. Put power directly to the pump....nothing.

    Thanks for the help.
