    i had the thing that fit over the top and attached to a socket wrench but the damn thing kept on slipping. it was like the oil filter was stripped or something i dunno. but then i pulled out the big guns with one of these

    At the point of the wrench slipping I would of went with the screw driver through the center approach. I have had to a couple times on my bike and find it is overall the easiest way to do it.

    Through the sides. Think of it like you were connecting the 9 and 3 on a clock and use the handle on the screwdriver to turn the oil filter. Once you get it broke loose it is real easy to spin by hand.

    Don't worry - I had to figure it out through trial and error a few times myself. Good judgement comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgement. Its a viscious cycle.
