For what it's worth, I'm an IT manager and constantly hiring. In the Austin market, there are more jobs available than techs, so if you can swing it, tech is the place to be.

What company do you work for? I am moving to Mirantis to teach Openstack but have been a long time Linux Admin.

I've often thought about moving to private sector and getting into IT. I went into undergrad as a comp sci but hated doing programming when it was an assignment when before I'd do it for fun. Still really good at it- built my own computer, de facto IT guy at my office- but haven't done anything formal with that in ages. Austin seems like a good place to make the jump if I decided to do so...

You might have to take a salary hit making the transition, but the money comes fast if you're good.

Oh no don't get me wrong I know tech fields are in abudance (and y'all get paid so damn nice) but I once saw the questions asked for the certs (I think it was the TIA?) and wow that was intense.

They become easier the more you work on tech stuff. Like the RHCSA is really easy once youve been doing linux for a while and the RHCE is just as easy. Its all about practice and doing it routinely.

Yeah I'm not very incognito, but might as well make people work for it.

You can get entry levels jobs on attitude alone. If you want to go in as an engineer, no amount of certs will replace experience.

Haha yea I was that way too but Ive been using this username for a while on other forums too :D

I completely agree with this. I got my entry level job on attitude and putting in some work to understand computers. Starting at the bottom is typically the best place to start because you appreciate each promotion or new job you get. Also agree on the experience part. There were jobs I wouldnt dream of getting but now that Ive been in the IT field for a while I can get the jobs I really want. Thats why I am going to be a trainer :D I am damn good at teaching people and this company recognized that. I never settled for breaking even in salary and always worked for a bigger bump each time. I didnt just expect to get the increase, I worked damn hard for it and proved I deserved it.

Thought I'd bump this thread with another fine Texas product (other than my Tacoma). If you Austin guys ever decide to do a meet at this brewery - Adelbert's - please post it on the Texas thread.

Going over their menu they appear to have quite the variety. I've been looking for their - Flyin' Monks.
