This is true of the Univerisy of Texas area in Austin. No bikes on the sidewalks, period.

Although, dedicated bike lanes are present.

 

You’re discounting side street crossings. As you ride the sidewalks, what’s keeping cars from turning into you? Do you stop and check at every street?

 

And the bike lanes on Stassney, Slaughter, Wm Cannon, and Manchaca are used by cars because the lanes are narrow. Folks get run over in those lanes all the time.

Physics is a bitch, but right-of-way won't keep you out of the ER.

The whole thing started because of Cap expressing sympathy for people who run over bikers on purpose. And I’m just trying to say they belong on the road. Just because they risk their lives to be on the road doesn’t excuse the behavior of inattentive or impatient or homicidal drivers. Their life is at greater risk on yhe sidewalk, and they are following the letter of the law by being on the road.

Texans are huge on freedom, except for freedom to use a road. We can’t even get highways expanded anymore without them becoming privately owned toll roads. Avoiding tolls is becoming impossible in urban areas. [unrelated, I know, but this is BS thread after all]

Yea my wife wont even Ride the roads where we live due to it being real dangerous unless she is riding in a giant group that can provide some protection. So if she wants to ride she loads up the bike and heads to a dedicated bike area a good ways away.

When I was going to UTA, I tried to bike around town bcause I had no vehicle and there is no public transport in Arlington. It was scary how ridiculously close people would pass me by regularly even though I stayed completely on right end of lane, so i gave up on that. When lane is too narrow to fit a bike and a car side by side, legally you’re supposed to take over the whole lane, but that description is pretty much 90+% of lanes, so I didn’t do that, because then I would risk maniacs trying to run me over for being too slow.

I tried sidewalks, but between all the stopping at every side street, and all the non-existing sidewalks, it was not a solution at all.

In short, riding bikes in Texas sucks balls.

Fort Worth has similar areas. In town, there are dedicated lanes to separate cyclists from vehicles. Except for turning traffic and assholes on their phones, the lanes work well.

Out of town, we have a lot of single lane, no shoulder, limited visibility roads that cyclists have no business being on. Sure, it’s legal, but doesn’t mean it’s smart.

 

Any good regear shops that can install 4.88’s in houston? Some places are charging 3k for just labor.. when rogue offroad and sdhq are well known performance shops that only charge 1200

 

If you’re going to ride in town, you need a GoPro on your helmet. Getting hit is a “when” not “if”, but hopefully you can catch the person that hits you.

If your up for the drive CCC shop, greater Austin is the place to go @Texoma (Chris) is a master ninja wrencher on Toyota’s. He worked on mine an a plethora of other members rigs an recently installed his own gears. Does great work only person I would recommend.
