    yea we were reviewing Syngas that can be derived from coal. The pollution output is horrible though. Not to mention biofuels are pointless as well.

    Alternative energy has absolutely nothing to do with geology so I'm not sure why you are covering that in class.

    Nevermind I googled it. Since when is mining considered "alternative energy"? It's the oldest type of energy we have.

    New ideas on how to use the metals after they are mined are chemistry, not geology.

    Mining for new metals to use for alternative energies is geology. Im no expert, but mining for coal and mining for rare earths may use different methods. It's still geology and would be covered in a geology class.

    Wind farms also affect soil conditions and the geology of the wind farm site, both on the surface and below the surface.

    I agree that mining is no doubt geology. One of pillars of it in fact.

    However soils, wind, etc fall into "environmental science" in my book. Physical geology is about the rocks, their relationship to one another, and their depositional and deformation history.

    Call me a purist....

    And before we start saying "six of one, half a dozen of the other", companies that have geological positions usually don't even interview people with "environmental science" degrees. fair or not, its actually usually seen as "cop-out" major
