This is so far from anything I was trying relay I'm assuming you didn't read my first post. No offense taken but I think you were drunk when you typed ^ that.

Me and the guy from Orange County were hotel guests in the Hotel, both of us were visitors there. I don't how else to say that. He asked me where I was coming from and I said Austin and he replied he was from the OC. Why or how on God's earth is the location of the hotel relevant to my question? I didn't include any information on the hotel because it's not important to my question. I could have posted and said we were in a hotel in downtown Beirut and that information would still be absolutely irrelevant and useless.

You're not understanding the whole point of the post are you? Austin is a city, Orange County is not a city, it's a county.

This member (jasmine) understands my question. Anyhow thanks for the replies, my simple question was answered. This thread can be closed.

short answer: too many little (cali standard little) towns in the LA area; so you give a general location rather than explain for 20 mins exactly where your obscure town is.

If I say Gonzales,Ca people don't know where that is, heck some people from the same county don't know it. That's why I say Monterey County.

Let me say, that is a SOCAL Thing. I used to get so annoyed when I went down there and people talked like that.

    Just my 2 cents

Why not just follow up with the question "where about in Orange County?".. Not that I'm sure you really care anyway.

Edit: I guess this thread was through anyway.

    Bingo.

In the majority of the country, you have a town, 10 miles of road, town, 10 miles of road, etc....
It's only in the major metropolitan areas where you have little or no rural area between town borders.

In SoCal, primarily Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego counties, we have areas that are as large as 4 or 5 typical midwestern counties that are comprised of as many as 50 "cities"... and you can't tell when you leave one and enter another except the color of the street name signs changes.
In many cases, these "cities" aren't even truly incorporated cities.

So "Orange County" may indeed be an accurate answer. Someone who lives in Trabuco Canyon falls under Orange County jurisdiction.
And of course, "Trabuco Canyon" doesn't tell you much... hell... it doesn't tell Californians much.
It's easier to eliminate the political boundaries and simply say "I live in Chino, about 25 miles from Disneyland."

Also, MOST California counties are named for the city that hosts the county seat.

Saying "Orange County" technically is answering the question "near what large city?"

Outside of California, counties may be named after native tribes, or some pioneer or other explorer who originally claimed/developed/mined the area... there may or may not be a city by the same name, and that city may or may not be the largest city in the county.
Arizona is a prime example of this. Where is Phoenix County, Tucson County, or Flagstaff County? In California, most likely those would be the county names.... or the largest cities might be Pima, Maricopa, etc....

If you look at the major regions of Southern California, from one to the next one it is easily an hour drive in traffic. So from Los Angeles to the middle of Orange County can take an hour easily (especially on the 405). The Inland Empire, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, are an hour from the beach in Orange County, or an hour from L.A. to the West. From Orange County to San Diego, plan on at least an hour.

I say I'm from Los Angeles when traveling overseas, as people know where that is. But it can create problems when someone is in the City of L.A. and wants to meet up, and I have to explain that I'm at least an hour away.

And yes, distance here is typically described in terms of time.

In fact, to use a Texas example, people know where Dallas is. They may not understand that it can take an hour to drive from East Dallas to West Ft. Worth. And there are all those lovely rolling hills in between. Most Californians have no idea what is in Northeast Texas.

In Orange County, CA, there is no space between cities like there is in Texas. If you don't watch carefully for signs, you can drive through three cities on the same surface street and not notice.
