It's not really an exploit. You get your damaged assessed at a shop they state the repair will cost X,XXX. You opt to get everything fixed but the bumper, take the difference that would have bought an OE bumper and get a plate one instead. I'll bet it will cover most if not all the costs.

If you go the insurance route... don't let them put non-oem parts on your truck. I was rear ended and had to deal with similar issues... ultimately, the Insurance company refused to pay for OEM parts because of price but when I compare the prices for their aftermarket parts to Toyota parts, they were very similar. I didn't worked with my dealership and explained that I was willing to pay the difference and the fine folks at DON MCGILL Toyota in Katy TX hooked me up with a price match stating that OEM tolerances are much better and make for an easier job. They did warn me that this isn't always possible because sometimes the Toyota parts are much more expensive. Sorry I do not have any do it yourself advice but this could be helpful

I feel your pain. Had this happen two months ago. Texting and driving issue. Perfect truck, now with a Carfax accident report. Replaced the whole rear bumper. No frame damage. What really fired me up though, the reputable Toyota body shop scratched my tailgate when removing the bumper. So that had to be painted. Looks perfect now. Don't cut corners. Just have the guy's insurance pay to fit it properly when you have time. I am sure the truck is fine to drive cross country for now.

A hard hit can lead to frame damage with a plate bumper.

a heavy offroad bumper would come out with less damage but would transfer the impact and probably cause damage to the frame

a hard hit will lead to frame damage anyway. the trailer hitch will take the hit and bend the frame

true but in this exact situation a plate bumper wouldn't of broke to pieces. it would of shifted and probably twisted the frame.

I'd let a shop do it and $2200 seems awful cheap for the damage done there.

I doubt it. that wasn't a hard hit maybe 10mph all that's hurt is sheet metal and plastic

I would shop around a bit. Where I live you have a choice to which bodyshop you can take your vehicle in for repairs. I recently took my Truck into a bodyshop that a local Lexus dealers uses. The bodyshop used all Toyota parts and everything looks perfect.

Yeah its the worst. Can you tell from the photos whether or not I'll be able to tow a U-Haul? It seems as though everything on and aroud the hitch is fine...including the electronics.

They are a plague. Texting and driving isn't legal yet they do that. So when a wrench hits their car they're obvious to what actually happened. Dumb f**ks.

I see it non-stop here and 99% of the time coming and going to work
they nearly cause a collision. Wish they'd ticket for it in Va., toss a wreckless
at them and maybe they'd take a break.

In Oregon an insurance company can't tell you where to have repairs done and can't insist on aftermarket parts. We have a few repair shops around that won't use aftermarket parts and it drives the insurance companies nuts cause it cuts into their profits. I have a friend who works for an insurance company and I mentioned having a car fixed at one of these shops and she almost had a stroke railing about how bad they were, I said that I would always use them because they only use OEM parts and guarantee their work for the life of the vehicle. They also do DV (Diminished Value) assessments which can net extra money to make up for the fact that your vehicle will be worth less down the road when you go to sell it.
