Eager to find out what actually broke, but need to move on from the “abuse” theory. My son’s Jeep negotiates bigger obstacles daily than what the guys at TFL were up to, and I’ve never needed to rescue it b/c it crapped a part. His engine also sounds a lot better than theirs does under load.

just wait for the hybrids to come out... that will give that jeep a run for its money.

Im guessing the traction control acts like a torque driver on the parts of the front differential back to the transfer case. If the conditions are too slick it might make this more likely to happen.

If one front axle broke wouldn’t they still have got some power to the other front wheel?

I have to say -- I will not be buying a Tacoma again, and my final answer when my extended warranty runs out is 2024 Colorado WT. My 75,000-mile 2016 3rd gen TRD OR truck just needed new manual transmission (and all ancillaries plus accumulator), valve cover leak, and the dreaded timing cover reseal covered under extended warranty. My service dealer was great and did their very best to take care of me and even offer to give me a new clutch for parts only - big shoutout to them, but overall it took four weeks for both trans and timing cover reseal. As for trans: synchro was completely gone, fluid was bad, trans were plonking (either input shafts or something) over every potholes since I got new, first gear never engaged right -- noted in service record since two months into ownership. My extended warranty has paid almost 1/2 the purchase price of my truck. ($16,000 total paid out from that, plus other repair and another grand's worth of both front LCAs a while back, and a few more items every year)

How long until people here claim it’s from abuse from using your truck as a truck?

I am not a fanboy of any product. I liked my Tacomas, my ZR2, and my various Jeeps. They all have good and bad things. I've had fewer overall issues with my Jeeps than my Tacomas, the ZR2 was the perfect middle ground with front and rear lockers and the DSSV suspension but it had all the Diesel problems I could handle! As for comparing the V6's meh, that's a waste of time, neither are perfect and I have no intention of pretending I will keep one for a decade.

My Mojave only fell 2nd to my ZR2 in handling characteristics! Very nice package. My new Rubidon XR with Falcon shocks is OK but is no Mojave!

I wouldn't think so. Power prefers the more free-wheeling side of the differential. A snapped axle would make it essentially rear wheel drive.

That warranty $$$ over the years reminds me of my 2003 Tracker ZR2 with 4 inch lift and 32's, when I bought the extended warranty the dealership was like 'hell ya!' in 3yrs we've made almost 17k on your rig. The difference is that little rig so long ago was about 20k!

    So it’s the tire’s fault?

The other wheel would get the same amount of torque that the broken side gets. Meaning not enough to propel the truck forward in any meaningful way to be able to still call it front wheel drive. If they had a front locker then sure.

But I don’t think we even know that a CV broke for sure. At least I haven’t seen that confirmed. My guess was on the spider gears or ADD collar.

The excuses in here are hilarious. It’s bad optics, unless you're a GM guy, but it’s first year truck and the only incident we’ve heard of so far.
It’s not a huge deal, and I’ll bet Toyota takes care of it.

Bottom line, the truck failed in a scenario it is designed for. Not sure why an excuse is needed.
