Yes, I agree- sounds like whoever he spoke with didnt know the right answer. They just want to be sure to have current registration information on it.

Could everyone post the state they are referencing. Each state has different laws regarding this. That would help research the origin of a rule.

    OK,

I went into the DMV on Saturday. Took the original tags and registration and the current tags and registration in with me. I did not drive the truck. Obviously as it had no tags on it.

They reverted the tags back to the original tags that were issued.

When I got the original set of tags several weeks after I leased the truck they were the everyday run of the mill plates issued as they were pulled off the stock pile at the time of issue last year.

I went on line through the DMV site and ordered the personalized vanity plates. Entered the required information, title number and last four digits of the VIN. Paid the additional fee for the type of tags and the personalization and plates myself and they came via the US mail shortly after from the DMV.

So I got a bee up my bonnet and decided I did not want that personalized vanity plates on my truck but rather another vehicle I own. It's not financed. I own it outright. Since the truck is leased, I'm not the owner, TFS is. The registration says the following:

    Toyota Lease Trust
    C/O My Name
    My Address

I am not the owner of the said truck, TFS is.

This is my first lease with TFS. I've leased many vehicles and have never had an issue putting or removing the personalized plates on the car. On my last lease I had personalized vanity tags. When I wanted to keep the personalized vanity tags as I bought the leased vehicle. DMV said: They needed a release of ownership from the leasing company as that lease too I was not the owner of the vehicle. DMV gave me temp tags until I got the letter. The leasing company sent me the release letter a few days later, notarized and saying they released the rights to the vanity plate. So in this case I called DMV and they said the same thing. So I called TFS to request the same type of release. TFS said that I was not allowed to have personalized vanity plates on the vehicle or change them. I said they already had them on it. That's when she asked who authorized them. I said DMV did. She placed me on hold and came back and said the only way they would surrender the personalized vanity plates was for me to terminate the lease early and turn in the vehicle, ride the lease out for the term I signed up for, or pay it off. Only after one of those 3 were met would they sign over the vanity plates to me.

I've not leased in some time. The last lease they were a total PITA. The lease was for 39 months but they claimed it was for 36 months and wanted the car back now, not later. We ended up suing them. We exercised all the right check marks indicating our intent to purchase it. They just thought they were going to steamroll us over. They had to pay the legal fees, ect. All my papers said 39 months, none of it said 36. I suspect they wanted it back badly as it was valued at 5K more than what the agreed lease end value was and they were going to make money on it. The funny part was the leasing company was bared from selling vehicles in my state and the title was not from my state but from Florida. But the registration was issued from the state I live in.

All of my current vehicles with the exception of the one I want to put the personalized plates are financed through my Credit Union. Which is local to me and I've never had any issues. I've not gone outside that box in a while.

As for modding the truck. All I've done to the truck was added OEM running boards that I bought off of Facebook yard sales and the remote start which is plug and play with no wiring cutting. The only reason I went with way I did on the running boards is the dealer wanted 1200 bucks for them installed. When I bulked they got all spun up on the leasing factor and said if I installed any mods on the truck they would charge me at the end of the lease for the damage. I said nothing and kept going. I'll just remove them if I turn it in.

As for TFS not wanting to budge on the plates I have no freaking idea. Control issue? TFS would not say why. I was going to call a dealership and ask and remain anonymous to see what they would say. I know it's all sounds like drama. But it makes no freaking since what so ever. Lease or buy if I went bad they would still repo it. A Repo outfit should VIN it before they took it anyway. If they are going solely by the plates they would have been going up and down the street for a while.

    All good now.

Wow all that frustration over some plates. Take it easy fella there's no reason to trash TFS over something so petty
