Here's a small write up for people interested in a gated shifter for the Automatic first gens out there.
So normally your shifter linkage looks something like this.
    IMAG0493.jpg
And the oem shifter pushes to change gears. The gate shifter pulls, so we're going to have to invert the shifter linkage as such.
    IMAG0494.jpg
Here is where the first problem is, the linkage rubs on the transmission pan, not good, over time that could cause damage sliding back and forth and would probably make for some not so smooth rows while going through the gears. So with the help of a blow torch and a nice bfh, we can get it to bend the way we want. Make sure you don't hammer on the hole that transmission stud goes into as it is a very tight fit and you'll have to clean up the hole with a file if it is dented at all, ask me how I know . Also cut off the bottom of the linkage if you'd like, not necessary but makes for a cleaner finish.
    IMAG0498.jpg
You will need to put a 1/4" hole on the bottom of the bracket for the small ball joint to fit in, I drilled mine right on the 0 of the part number closest to the bottom.
This is where I mounted my cable bracket, it only has the one bolt on, but if need be a bracket can be made to mount the other side. It is tightened down pretty well, but I will update this if it becomes an issue.
    IMAG0503.jpg
After a couple coats of paint on the bracket this is what we have.
    IMAG0502.jpg
As to where you mount the shifter itself, that is up to you, the cable is plenty long. I am yet to mount mine but will update when I do. Good luck!!

Ran into my first problem, truck wasn't starting, turns out it wasn't in park. The cable is slightly to small, like 1/8" to small.
    IMAG0505.jpg
No biggie, I'm just going to drill another hole higher on the bracket and that should bring the ball joint close enough. And should make for tighter shifting, I'll get back to you when it's done.

Bring me up to speed, what's the advantage of a gate shifter, over the stock one?

Alright, next issue, or trouble shooting. So... where I have the cable mounted is not going to work, who would've guessed. The reason it is not going to work is because the ratio of turning on the transmission and the shifter are different, obviously. And I need a greater ratio and the way to do that is to make the arm longer which means the cable has to be closer and in turn I have to choose a different mounting location. So I was thinking of making a plate to bolt along the oil pan to move the cable closer, and then extending the arm. So that is next on the list. Much updating to come!!

On the center console? No. But the shifter does indeed work properly now. It was brought to my attention that they make one for our tacomas now so any modification isn't really necessary.

No, he said he has the factory A340 transmission that comes with the truck.

The gated shifter is intended to be used in the TH400. He just posted how to adapt it to our trucks.

Post #10 shows the two pieces I needed to purchase. And their part numbers from summit racing.
The top one replaces the arm on the shift linkage. And the bottom one attaches to two of the bolt locations on your oil pan. That's all there is to it. And running the shifter cable and what to do with the shifter is all custom.
And here's a link for the shifter
