I'd look closely at the back of the cab. These trucks show up as total losses all the time at our local auction because the bed smacks the back of the cab and springs back. In simple terms the truck is ducked and the insurance company doesn't want to bother tearing into it further

Unfortunately I bet the truck is a total loss. If it pushed the bumper in that mug it probably tweaked the frame.

X2 There was a TRD double cab at the salvage auction that just barely had the hitch pushed down and still a total loss. The body was mint.

First off, glad everyone is okay! Truck did its job.

I was rear ended last July with similar damage that you have- truck was not totaled, very fortunate. The damage was on the driver's side of the bumper and hit at an angle. The impact crumpled by bedside, canted the bed, destroyed the bumper, bent the tailgate, etc. Frame was fine...

I believe the saving grace for my frame was that the hitch was not impacted or at least didn't take the brunt of the impact.

    Glad everyone's OK!

Sucks about the truck, hopefully it's not totaled. I remember when I was rear-ended in my '93 2WD Toyota pickup ~22 years ago, not having a bumper was what saved my frame (& truck from being totaled). Crumpled the back of the bed and the tailgate, but never touched the frame thankfully.

Took the bodyshop 3 tries to get the paint matched correctly (dark blue pearl), but that's a rant for another time & thread.

If you can take a couple pics of the gap between the cab and bed, or at least look closely for impact points and/or uneven gaps - might give you better insight as to how this scenario is going to play out...

i checked the body where the bed may have hit and did not notice any dents or scrapes where they would have touched.
So i guess thats a good thing. Ill get under there today for a thorough inspection.

With a laser measuring system made by caroliner or genesis . Your frame can be off without being visable . In that case it's totally repairable . It could have a diamond (a term we use that means one rail is pushed forward) twist or height issue . To me it doesn't look like a bad hit.
The reason hers is so bad is that it completely went under your bumper and missed hers all together . What people refer to as the bumper in reality is only a cover to make it look good.
I can see the bumper reinforcement bar is basically unscathed. Her car took the hit in the headlights and just pushed everything back so there was no solid hit. There probably was no serious damage to the frame. But the door gap issue says there is (your sure it wasn't off before?). Get it measured and ask for the printout and the alignment printout.

So from the photo it still looks like your bumper is straight and not bent down. That's hopefully good news and a positive sign that any frame damage there might be is repairable. When you see the bumper angled down that is usually a sure sign the frame is totaled. What usually happens is there is a hitch in the receiver and that acts as a lever arm that bends down the rear part of the frame - often severely. Looks like in your case you wisely did not have a hitch installed (never install the hitch unless you are actually towing) and better still the stout HD bumper took most of the hit effectively shielding the receiver just beneath it. Hitting the bumper directly is more desirable because it is in line with the frame and not offset as a lever arm like the receiver or a hitch in the receiver.

Glad you are all OK! Hope the repair proves to be easy.

And yeah, a good reminder that it is best to just ignore the kid in the backseat until you are fully stopped someplace. I've caught myself before reaching back before realizing - "hey, this isn't important at all, drive the vehicle instead."

If it's bent just do a link/bed cage and cut the back portion off with the payout. Problemo solved.

And the other reason this may help the OP is that when her car effectively submarined his bumper, that left the "soft tissue" above it (headlights, grill, etc.) to take the brunt of the impact. Said another way, all that damage on her car allowed the OP's truck to take a softer hit.

The irony is your frame is MORE likely to be fucked up because of the HD bumper.

Really what you should be saying is thank god for the way her car crumpled, as this was the only thing protecting you, your kid, and your truck.

I'm not against HD bumpers and will be getting one myself but people really need to ditch this myth that they protect you better. Nothing protects you better than stock bumpers.

Glad everybody is good and well.
