I slept 4 hours in a soaked tent and ate frozen burritos and monster to stay up.

I left just the mesh zipped up because it was hot so the air would flow and it started torrential down pouring for 5 hours and it rained through the mesh and soaked me and my gf in our tent. We both woke up soaked to the bone and I left my boots outside so I wouldn't get the tent dirty and they filled up with water. I was ill prepared. My gf won't go camping again unless I get an RTT

That sucks man. Didn't have a rain fly on the tent? I've never had that problem

I did but it wasn't zipped in the front so there was no tension fully directing the water off of us

I do not see how the RTT would help.

And people say they sway and move too much because of being elevated and because of the suspension on the truck

They also provide you with entertainment. I can't tell you how many people walk into my stinger  I swear people must be blind because it's not that big and it's pretty noticeable. Best place for it? Sonic

Also great because you always know where your front end is.

The only thing that is keeping me away from a plate bumper is having the whole suspension system so exposed seems like a bad idea

he means when its parked, the fact that it is mounted to a movable surface means the tent will sway any time you move around in it.

I got a plate because I know I'll screw something important up whether it's sharp rocks or big logs sticking out of the trail

I don't know personally but i've heard of people selling their RTTs because they made them a little queezy on the windy evenings
