Put on OME 880 coils and Wheeler 3 leaf AAL. Ride is much better and gained about 1.25"

Yeah, the siimplicity+ reliability was awesome, except for the manual locking hubs.

The manual hubs were just a pain to get out of the truck and manually lock them, unlike the auto locking hubs of today.
The power was adequate for that pre-taco platform. They were smaller, lighter, and geared differently which put adequate power down to the wheels. The new 2.7L has far more HP however, it needs to move a bigger, heavier truck so its all relative. Those pre-taco's had awesome off-roading capability right out of the box, almost impossible to get stuck.

    Fixed it for you ;)

Modern systems the front half-shafts always spin, the diff and transfer case handle the locking.
GM pushed "full time 4WD" in the early 70s with permanently locked hubs... of course, that simply sucked fuel because the tires always drove the front driveline. They finally dropped that nonsense when they went to the IFS, but in the mean time, Rancho made a lot of money selling manual front hub kits.
Dad put a set on his '74 K5.

Push the button, wait for the light to stop flashing, put it in gear, step on the gas, holy fuck I'm still in 2WD

I don't think it ever was an issue... at least not after 1970 or so.
Once the transfer case is unlocked, the front driveshaft is free-wheeling unless the diff/hubs are locked.

I'm trying to remember how grandpa's old CJ3 worked... I don't remember it having a transfer case shifter, just locking hubs and the 3-speed "hamburger grinder" (no syncros)

31x10.50 and I just did the AAL and left the overload spring in for now. The ride is so much better, not stiff but more firm and balanced.

This is true,we now have to rely on electronics for the benefit of convenience as opposed to the old trucks. The offroad crowd could definitely benefit from a throwback manual T-case/hubs.

I can relate to this, that's why I'm never getting rid of this truck. it may be the last generation the manual transmission is offered. kind of sad really because manual is the only way I drive.

It seems the writing is already on the wall at least in the USA. Consumers here want Automatics, the manual enthusiasts are the minority. many Vehicle makes have already dropped manuals, even high end sports cars are adopting paddle shifters. In Europe , manuals still greatly outnumber the automatics. If we ever get away from an internal combustion engine (electric) , I can't see the manual transmission surviving except for nostalgic purposes in "antique" vehicles.

She's eventually gonna be running a MT setup like Shemicals. I'm thinking about going with American Motorsports. I like how beefed up thier kit is compared to the competion.
