Lots of things. The RTT is great if the last thing you do is set up camp. I like to get to my camping spot, set camp and then go fish, hike, wheel etc. That doesn't work with the RTT since its stuck to the truck. Sometimes its not a big deal but most the time it drove me nuts.

I also got a dog and he likes to be around me. I wanted the floorless shelter so I don't have to worry about him tracking in mud and grime.

Finding a spot for the RTT wasn't as easy as it seemed. With the tipi you just need a flat enough spot for you to sleep. If the rest of the ground isn't perfectly flat, who cares. With the RTT, if the truck isn't level then the tent won't be. Also, its a lot easier to tuck the tipi into the trees to get out of the wind.

Lastly, the RTT is huge. I have more sleeping space with a stove to keep warm in the winter with the tipi. It all packs into a nalgene bottle and weighs under 4lbs. I now use the same tent for everything. Truck camping, ice fishing, back packing, hunting, it fits all my needs.

I didn't think the RTT made a big difference in power but handling had a noticeable drop. You can feel the tent up top and it was horrible in the wind

I agree with all of that ^

The novelty and cool factor of having one wears off fast after you realize how annoying it gets to always have to pack up camp anytime you need your truck while wheeling. And he's right about the trees and flatland too.

While a RTT looks cool and is a cool idea... I wouldn't get one again unless it was on a trailer.

Good points all around. I will stick with my ground tent set up.

They do look like a very cool way to camp but I can't stand the price of one nor the bulk/mass of one of those tents even when it's all packed up and on a rack. It's still HUGE!

    Thanks guys

You can get a lot done by keeping stock gears and just breaking open the rear to add a selectable locker.

If you're going to the trouble to crack open both diffs to regear, go large and throw lockers in at the front and back.

Yep! It was cool for a bit and there are a few nights that I wish I had it. They are awesome to pull off the side of the road in a parking lot to save on hotels but thats a rare occurrence. I used it a few times to sleep through a winter storm until the roads opened again too. I used it numerous times outside a friends house as an alternative to walking home from the bar or getting a ride from someone else.

Id put some money into a quality ground tent. Lots of guys get dinky little 2 man tents for sub $100 and then stand in awe at all the room the RTT has to offer or talk about how well they are built. They are not as rugged as people make them out to be. They are not built like a custom canvas wall tent that will be passed down generation to generation. However, they are nice and will hold up to most anything the average joe will run into, aside from extreme winds. RTT's suck in wind.

You can get ground tents that you can stand up in (like mine) and have room for gear and such. Heck, you could get a luxurylite cot and have a comfortable bed as well. I wouldn't spend much on a tent unless you plan to get lots of use out of it. I spent a pretty penny on my tent but I like to go out fairly often (once a month at least) and am slowing getting set up for full blown winter fun next year. I need a new bag, bivy, and some stakes for deep snow. As well as figuring out how to safely take my dog to enjoy the fun.

Yup, I would have probably stayed at 32's had I not felt the need to re-gear. I wanted the 35's but I didn't want to have to buy everything at once. I know driving on 4.88's would be brutal on 32's but I didn't want 4.56...and then I couldnt go into the rear diff without adding a locker...etc etc. It was literally a landslide of "shit, now I have to do this".

    DDDDOOOOOO ITTTTTT

I regret not getting the front locker BTW. Only in snow, but the rear certainly helps out. Its fun having an open open guy struggle through a deep section and then you just keep up chuggin through.

I've pretty well ruled out the RTT. I'm going to pick up my tacoma tomorrow afternoon and I would like to contact Addicted Offroad about this bed rack they made for a guy...

It seems like a one time design/fabrication piece because I don't see it listed on their website. I like the idea of being able to put a soft top right over it if it's not loaded down with crap.

Pretty sure you can use either. I think I bought the longer v6 filter a few times accidentally and it fits fine.

I think he was saying you can do a lot with just adding a locker. Not so much suggesting running 35's on stock gears. I don't suggest that either :p.
