Found a set of 17” FJ rims for nearly free dollars. I have about another year left on my current tires (255 85 r16) and looking at costs, 17” similar profile are much cheaper.

Happened upon a good CL deal for a set of steelies with some 265/75-16 Cooper Discoverer for $240. Tires are super old but still have good tread so probably run them for a bit till I get my daily OR rims/tires plastidipped. Then I think I’ll run the steelies as a “trail set” with the Nankang N889 M/T Mudstar seems to have some pretty great reviews for the price anyone where run them yet?

Alright fellas, so here in a couple weeks I’m gonna take a road trip a little over 1,000 miles with a decent amount of wheeling. So I’m getting close to rollin over 60k so was wondering what maintenance I should take care of before heading out.

things ive done recently or will do soon.
    - Oil change
    - Rotate tires
    - power steering flush, done
    - brake fluid flush, done
    - serpentine belt, done

    Should I do these?
    - differential flush, front & rear
    - transmission flush
    - transfer case flush
    - coolant flush

I'm currently working on adding mid travel suspension. After that I'll be plating the front part of the frame as well as new motor mounts.

For sure I’ll at least pop the plugs and take a look probably a better idea then gettin all the oil and not needing to do it for a while haha.
I think the coolant is probably a good idea anyway. I haven’t done a flush on a Taco but anything tricky I need to know? Or is it just as straightforward as any other flush?

Spare should be good it’s less than a year old but good idea might as well check the pressure.

I was at Lowe’s earlier today and noticed some of that but honestly didn’t really know what I was looking at haha.

I’ll definitely post a trip report but heading to SW Colorado gonna check out Wheeler Geologic site, Stony Pass, Ophir Pass, Imogene Pass, Yankee Boy Basin, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, then up to Crested Butte and check out Schofield Pass/Paradise Divide if they are open. It should be a good trip!

Keeping the regular cab post alive. Just posting my truck. Simple truck but would like to put bigger tires on it. Hearing a lot of good things on the bilstien 5100s but put that with UCAs and it's a bit pricy. If I were to go 2" would I need UCAs? Would like to fit 285/75/17s but don't know how hard that's gonna be.

265/70r17 will fit with no problem. 255/80r17 will fit with a little work. 285s are gonna need substantial cutting unless you're a mall crawler. I'm on 265s with just a little lift.

Yea. 265/70/17s is what I got now. They seem good and it's what I should probably keep to keep cost down but you know. Bigger tires are always more fun. But you gotta pay to play.

I've considered the 255s, but I feel like my 4 banger struggles at times already. No way I'm adding even more weight with the 285s, but man they look great.

Maybe I should just stick with the size I have. 265/70/17 isnt that bad. I'd like to get a lift for it but I got cracking on my tires meaning I gotta get tires soon. Maybe lifted with the new tires won't look bad when the time comes.

285/75/17 will be too tall and need a lot of work to fit. 285/70/17 is shorter but still needs work to fit. You would want a 3" lift which would be coils and shocks (you don't want spacers) and adjustable UCA's make it easier to align which would drive better and reduce chances of wear. I have 305/65/17 which is almost the same height as the 285/70/17. It needs the pinch weld beaten back, mud flaps removed, flares trimmed back and I get a small rub on the cmc at full turn on inclines. I did not do the cmc and I'm not planning on it.

It looks like a pain to fit 285/75/17s from what your saying. Even with a 3 inch lift it looks like a bit of work to chop stuff up. I usually am not a fan of doing that. I appreciate the help @JL8Jeff. Would 285/70/17s be more realistic? Obviously it looks like I'd need a 3 inch lift and require UCAs included if I want it done right.

285/70/17 will still probably need 3" lift and the UCA's will help with alignment but still need trimming of stuff. My truck already had the pinch weld beat back and the flares trimmed when I got it and it's really not a big deal. Have you looked into 275/70/17 tires if you want something a little wider/taller without being as much of a hassle. If you're sticking with the stock wheels, they aren't as wide as aftermarket wheels so the tire will look narrower regardless of the size you get. If you go to a 8 or 8.5" wide wheel, the tires will run wider as well. It gets costly real quick.

I run 285/75r16's on my stock steelies. Have about 1.5" lift in the front. I wouldn't necessarily have called it a pain to make them fit. Had to cut the cab mount, beat the pinch weld and trim the inner fender flares a little bit. Took me about 30 minutes to each side. But now I have no rubbing and have excellent clearance. I guess it just depends on how willing you are to cut up your truck.

Love my 255’s man. Had to drop it into 4th sometimes on Hills and with headwind but they are perfect.

Depends on the mood of the day. I'm about 8 to 12 months away from new tires. When the time comes it'll be either ST Maxx in 255 or Geolandar M/T G003 in 265. I just can't decide. :argue:
