After 210k I finally had to tackle this beast…

    IMG_9113.jpg

    Shiny new pipe:

    IMG_9114.jpg

When I pulled the old pipe with the leak, I expected it to fall apart like others have stated. It did not.

This was a total bear to do. Mainly the ventilation hose on the back of the manifold. It does not like to go on. I also did the radiator hoses and fought the clamps on those for a while lol.

Bottom manifold bolts were very tricky to thread also, having to use a series of extensions to reach and hope the bolt doesn’t fall into the abyss somewhere.

210k miles that’s got to be a or close to a record!
While I did the pipe I replace every hose that antifreeze flows through! Also did the belt, thermostat with a stuck open safety and I believe 15 degrees lower temp and housing. The water pump, cleaned out at least a half quart of motor oil from the intake hosing. I found a really good small catch can to let the crank case vent so it wouldn’t keep filling the intake manifold with bypass oil. Replaced the gasket for the manifold & valve cover. And did a few other vacuum lines. Couple cans of engine cleaner and a bottle brush with a mix of Dawn and Simple Green. Then busted my knuckles for about a half a day.

Don't wait, just do it. It's a lot easier when you decide when the coolant's going to explode out of your system. I had a lot of coolant leak out after not driving for a few days and I luckily noticed the big dried pink spot - otherwise you could overheat your engine really easily.

I know things are difficult on a relative scale for different people, but honestly it's not too bad. Zip tie stuff like cables out of the way and I unbolted the fuse box to give myself more room to work with.

I remember watching a couple videos and this helped:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHT7JlICgLE&ab_channel=mjSchmidtMedia

Although I only changed out the pipe and nothing else (will do other stuff with a water pump in the near future though).

Wow a half quart??? My intake didn’t have any liquid oil just a light coating of oil. It was all tacky. I guess from the pcv system. I didn’t bother cleaning it, my truck runs great. I just cleaned the gasket surface for the intake and throttle body.

    Yeah,
Set the intake manifold out in the sun in the indriveway while I worked on the truck. A about 4 hours later I walked out to see about a half cup of motor oil running out of the manifold. Went to the store to get a couple cans of engine cleaner. Sprayed engine cleaner down the intake and runners and used my wife’s approx. 2.5” dia. x 14” long bottle brush to scrub the inside. OMG‼️ What a mess of oil. I ordered more bottle brushes for my wife or I would be 6’ under‼️

Trucks been running great after putting it back together since the coolant pipe job.

However, I have noticed (it might just be in my head) that when the truck is in open loop like if I’m coasting, not touching the accelerator, the moment I step on the pedal and start giving it gas I hear this quick, very high pitched wine. It’s very brief. Only when I step on the pedal again and it goes back into closed loop. You wouldn’t hear it if the window was down or radio on.

I’ve heard this noise before but it seems like it happens more now. I’m not sure if it’s the throttle body opening up again, the fuel system or what.

It’s like a quick, “sheeewp!” Does anyone know what I’m talking about? Like I said it may just be in my head that I notice it more now.

Belt tensioner pulley or idlers is my bet.

Would there be any cause for concern? I did just change the serpentine belt recently…maybe that’s why I’m hearing it more.

If the tensioner or idlers fail 300 miles from home, that would be a problem.

It’s been making the noise for at least the last 50k miles… I just feel like I notice it a little more now..if if that’s what it is

Tensioner pulley is definitely loose. Do you know if the center bolt is reverse threaded or not?

I would replace or service the bearings on all the pulleys!
If you know how to properly pull a seal off a sealed bearing!

Replaced tensioner pulley and top idler pulley, that was not the issue, I am still hearing the noise. I suppose it could be the lower idler pulley… but it spins freely, it’s quiet, does not get hot or anything. It does seem like it has the most minuscule amount of side to side play. Less than the tensioner and top idler pulleys before I replaced them.

All the other pulleys seem fine upon visual inspection. And I cannot replicate the noise when parked and revving the engine. It’s only when the truck is under load like when immediately hitting the gas after coasting or when giving it gas after shifting to the next gear

It has a new sibling now. I hope it doesn’t get jealous. 2024 Ford F150 with Whipple gen6 stage 2 supercharger (785 hp). I hate that it’s an automatic (my first). The other day a Camaro reved up going by me. I went to push in the clutch to do the same then I remembered “Oh, I’m gray now”.

Don’t get me wrong I like it, but if I had to let one go it wouldn’t be the Taco. The Taco is like my emergency vehicle. No matter the weather or terrain the Taco will go, maybe not quickly or comfortably, but it will. IMG_9213.jpg
