If I rode woods, I'd buy one. Yamaha is getting somewhat serious about not letting KTM run away with the dirt bike market.

I'd go w/ the KTM until the Yamaha has actual proven itself. Doesn't look like there's much savings with the Yamaha.

But is sure is awesome that the Japanese are getting back on board w/ the 2 stroke.

What do you mean Yamaha needs to prove themselves? They never stopped making the YZ and MXA magazine rated it best 250 2 stroke this year. They liked it better than the KTM or Husky.

This new X version is a normal YZ with a wide ratio gearbox, 18" rear wheel, softer suspension, and a slightly different exhaust. Similar to how the KTM XC line is a more trail oriented SX.

Have you priced 4-strokes? They're no bargain, either... and when it comes time to rebuild the top end, a 4-banger is 2-3x more expensive for parts, and takes MUCH longer to do.

    Everything's expensive these days.

I want to get a YZ125 though. Think that will be my next motorcycle purchase. And it will be new.

yea i know. there is a reason why im not ever getting another 4stroke.. i just rebuilt my 250f and it was 1100 in BS parts and that wasnt even with a crank and piston. i dont think a top end on a 4t is much harder than a 2t if youve done top ends before. just more shit to take off really.

The number of parts on a 4 is what makes it harder... on a 2-stroke you don't have ANY camshaft/valvetrain-related parts. The more complex a system is, the more chances you have to make a mistake...Unless you routinely do top end rebuilds, it's easy to forget or overlook something...

Gotta say I'm loving the xr650r I just picked up. But that thing is built like a tank and I can adjust the valves in 10 minutes.

Not into the high strung 250/450f's.

Excellent, once they make a 300cc version with E-start I'm in! I built my 2006 YZ250 into a 300 with WR trans and 18"wheel already, this new bike isnt different enough to warrant a purchase, almost there though!

Slow my ass, lol. You should see all the smokers at the races! 2 strokes have been coming back ever since the first guy with a newer 4 stroke had to replace his head! I have (4) 4 strokes and (2) 2 strokes. I cant say I dont like 4 strokes because I still love em' but they all have their place. I swith between my 4 and 2 stroke racebikes depending on the type of race, it its fast I grab the Thumper if its technical I grab the smoker.

As far as top ends go I can do a 2 stroke in 15 minutes (including honing) a 4 stroke not so much. And if its a Honda your gonna be replacing valves on your 4 stroke every 100 hours if you ride hard, gets expensive!

Those things are damn near bulletproof! I used to ride one in Baja.

yea i rode a ktm 300 xcw and the real low first gear is kind of weird but the power is so controllable it makes up for it.

like you mentioned about each having it's place, i just rode a 4t for the first time in a year or two and the power is nice out of corners but i just like the excitement and nimbleness of the 2t.

lastly, thank goodness i dont have a honda besides the 500 :D yamaha has been a trusty steed minus replacing the trans gears lol.
