Just wondering, and forgive me if this has already been discussed, are the '18s any better? I tried a 2017 auto and hated the way it shifted constantly and seemed to hunt for gears. Have they been changed? I found it very annoying and I also have to wonder how long the auto trans will last with all the shifting.

I got a 2018 sport this past Sunday, it had 4 miles on it. I now have 250 miles...I know it's not much, but so far I'm enjoying it a lot. No gear hunting...no hard downshifting...no complaints. I came from a 2010 tundra. I drive 84 miles a day during the week, 90% highway.

Picked up my 18 DCSB Sport last November, put a few thousand miles on it so far. Love how it drives compared to my 09 OR. Mine doesn't gear hunt or shift hard at all. So far only complaint is that the driver seat still doesn't feel right. But that's a different thread altogethero_O

Yeah, I've yet to experience this gear hunting people talk about - and I live in a pretty hilly area.

Coming from an 8sp BMW auto, this trans is rather poor. They could definitely use an upgrade to an 8sp, especially considering other mfg's are beginning to use 10sp.
Is it terrible? No not at all, but I fee like the first 3 gears are either too tall or it shifts way too soon making it feel sluggish. I don't have issues with hunting but I drive on mostly flat roads.

I have no issue with sluggishness. Press harder on the gas and get more from the transmission. It's a closer feeling to the new CVT transmissions that are coming in newer sedans and compacts. I'm really pleased. ECT button feels more like a "tow mode" in my old Chevrolet (2005).

2017- love it. I suspect that individual driving style affects gear hunting, IMHO. :crapstorm:

The only problem I've had with my auto (I'm guessing it's transmission related, maybe I'm wrong), is on rare occasion when I hit the gas at a low speed, for a second it feels like the truck just doesn't want to go - like it's driving in quicksand - then it goes just fine again.

Like one time, I was pulling out of a parking lot, got into the lane, and then when I went to hit the gas, the truck just kind of bogged down, then it was fine again.

I don't know if it just didn't initially downshift and then finally did, or what the issue is.

Seems to be more of a regional problem from what I've been seeing. A lot of guys in the plain states where we have high winds and 75 to 80mph speed limits have the "hunting issue."

I was talking to a guy in Hawaii the other day that couldn't understand how the truck would hunt (and I couldn't understand how his didn't) until we realized where the other guy was from.

That makes sense- here in Cali, 70mph isnt pushing it that much. I expect it when towing, thus switch over to 4th.

I think that's the computer trying to figure out what you wanted and what gear to put it in.

I test drove a 17 OR DCSB and that's what it felt like... I was pulling something. Of course I was driving 70mph into a 20mph sustained headwind, but the truck could not/would not come out of 4th.

So, in anticipation of buying a 3rd gen, I have test driven them in my hometown, which is pretty flat and uneventful, I also rented an SR5 DCSB when we were on vacation on the Big Island. Where we stay you can drive from sea level to 13,000ft on the top of Mauna Kea. The truck we rented acted like normal, if we were in sustained climbing I would just use ECT and it was perfectly normal. The real shit tranny in a tacoma was in the 2nd gen behind the 4.0. I sold mine after 5 mos of owning, biggest POS ever (hyperbole). When you would try and overtake someone and you laid your foot into it, it would upshift and lay down and die. It has been said, and I agree, driving the 3rd gen is much like driving a two-stroke, it has a powerband :)
