I had a 2016 SR5 Access can 4X4 with the 4 cylinder. And it did the same thing with cruise control on. It would do the 4/5/6, 6/4/5/6 dance. I found driving it in S5 mode reduced this quite a bit and interestingly enough the RPM's in 5th gear are lower than in my 2006 Tacoma with a manual in 5th gear. Basically I had to drive it in S5 and not use cruise on the highway to prevent the shift dance.

I traded it in at 26K on a 2017 TRD Sport 4X4 V6 and it also does the 5/6, 6/5 dance but the shifts are smooth and almost not noticeable when the stereo is loud. Also the V6 drive much better in ETC mode than the 4 cylinder.

That's not a problem since the RPM change is only about 200 to 300 and is barley noticeable. The 4 cylinder on the other hand like the OP stated is very jarring wen it does that.

    Yes, Portland area.
For the last 3 nights we received at least 4 inches of nice powder each night which then melted off during the day. Record snow here for this time of year.
At least it wasn’t a crazy freezing rain/snow mix like in December.

Nice! I live in Beaverton and work in Lake O. I think last winter was much worse, but I guess that was in January and not late February. Our mountains are at a 3rd of what they were last year at this time se we need all the snow we can get ha

2018 Limited hunting and shifting constantly in D mode in the rolling hills area where I live. Also creates sluggish non-responsive throttle. I use ECT mode 90% of the time - problem solved. It does have a minor negative effect on fuel mileage. I read in a tips for 3rd generation thread that the transmission will "learn" your driving habits after a while and stop the constant hunting/shifting. I don't have the patience for it. :curls:

Since all the transmission programing should be the same coming from Toyota it's interesting to read how some people don't notice it, while others are very bothered by the shifting.

I have had close to 30 different cars, a lot of them autos and the Tacoma while very smooth shifting does have interesting programming. I would say it is the most "shift happy transmission" I've ever owned. I am assuming it's for fuel econ reasons. Even the slightest incline at highway speeds will make it downshift. Now if you're not paying attention and have the radio on it's not a big deal as it's a very smooth shifting transmission. However I can see why it bothers some people as it does shift up and down quite a bit to try and get to 5 and 6 asap.

I recently bought a 2018 OR automatic. I don't mind the auto shifting points for the most part.
But what I DO mind is that, whenever engaging the "manual" shift mode, it always goes into 4th gear.
(Except for one time so far when it went into 3rd). And it also seems to stay in 4th gear, even if you
come to a complete stop and then start moving again. In the other auto transmissions I've driven,
when you switch over to "manual" it just keeps you in the gear the auto had last selected, then
resets to 1st if you come to a complete stop. Does anyone else have issues with this or is it just me?

That's normal. It's limiting your highest gear, not locking you into said gear.

Yeah 4 means it won’t shift past 4. So when you stop it is actually in 1st. It displays 4 still which confuses a lot of people. Likewise if you set it to 3, it will only shift from 1-3, but will only show 3.

Mostly soccer moms! Real men would never give their 4.0 (balls) away! Lol! But really I live in Colorado and drive up the mountains every weekend and I promise you I have never been passed by a 3rd gen. They can’t drive up the mountain 90 mph loaded down. Mine cruise at 2000 rpm. 3rd gen was bouncing between the last gears going 70 with no weight. Get out of here lol. I’m sure with Manuel is way better. But after snowboarding 10 hours have fun driving stick in stop in go traffic down a mountain lol! I have money for a 3rd gen and would love one! But with that engine/transmission combo sucks in the mountains. And I’m not paying money to try to tune and fix a brand new truck spend 40k and hope it learns my shifting lol shit sounds broke to begin with. Please complain so the problem gets addressed because there most def is one.
