I have come to the conclusion that the first clunk or two when the transmission is cold is do to the power steering..

Also, any surging while backing up or going forward when engine is not at temp is also from the power steering..

While in gear, move your steering wheel, it brings the idle up sometimes drastically..

When coming to a stop, if you touch the wheel to create load at the same instance the trans is downshifting it gives you that bump...

I'm sure Toyota will solve this with an ECU update... Probably the last year of this generation...lol

2nd gen upshifting when you lay on the gas lol you must have drove a 3rd gen disguised as a 2nd or a 2.7 but my 4.0 downshifts unlike the 3rd and gives you mad torch. Then gets into high gear once it’s flying and locks into it. 3rd gen shift when there parked!

Whatever your second gen can do at 90, the third gen can do better and quicker. At sea level we have 40 more horsepower, at elevation, that difference is going to be very noticable, especially under a load.
Also doing 90 with a load is dumb, but somehow I'm not surprised that that has been posted...

never drove a 2nd gen reads new cars stats and automatically thinks it’s better. Test drive both in high elevation and tell me what one has more power and I’m not talking horse lol. Tell me watch holds gear better and what one rides a smoother rpm. After they fix the engine and transmission issue with the new gen I promise 3rd gen Tacoma will have the worst resale value of any Tacoma.

In Colorado there’s as many 3rd gens on Craigslist as 2nd and 1st why? :)

1500 miles on my 2018 OR DCSB and transmission acts like any other automatic I've ever driven.

Literally nothing you type is true and is easily disprovable. I'll let you in on a little secret, no one here in the third gen section cares about your second gen. Most of us have either owned a second gen or certainly have driven one, I almost bought one in '08 but ended up getting an FJ instead because it was better. Both were 4.0's. And if you want to talk real power, nobody is buying a V6 for that lol. There certainly are areas where the third gen could improve, but that's been true of every tacoma ever made. I'm glad you like your truck, maybe you should tell your fellow second gen owners about it and not us.

There was one guy that posted his 2018 was low. That is the only one I have heard of. I want to check my 2018 out (harsh jolts when coming to a stop 6 times now), but I don't want to find it low and not have Toyota believe me. That means I have to get the dealer to do it and I don't have much faith in them haha My harsh jolts when coming to a stop could just be axle wrap. I'm not too worried. I just want to check it for peace of mind.

Not an issue with my '17 auto, but do enjoy gearing down (s mode) sometimes instead of using my brakes!

Okay, thanks, but I'm still confused. If I come to a stop while it's in 4, and it still displays 4th gear, it seems to be sluggish when getting going. Like I'm indeed trying to start out from a stop in 4th gear. I then shift down three times and it feels like first gear again. Also if I'm going slowly when shifting over to "manual" while going down a hill I'll still have to downshift 3 times quickly to get the low gear engine-braking I'm looking for. I don't have any other issues with this 3rd gen automatic like I hear a lot of others here complain about, but this thing of always displaying 4th gear (and seeming to really be in 4th gear even if I've switched over to "manual" mode at like 2 miles per hour) really does seem odd. I'm surprised this doesn't get talked about more here, at least from what I've been able to see on the search feature.
