The 2021 Toyota Hilux is impressive, makes the Tacoma look like a Camry. :(

I made a comparison list against a 2021 Hilux and 2021 Tacoma. The Hilux is sure impressive. Basically it comes down to the Hilux being a real truck carrying and towing more load, strong axles, having a high flat torque curve engine at low RPM. It out performs the Tacoma in all mechanical abilities while burning less fuel.

The Hilux almost has the same amount of Torque as the 5.7L Tundra V8. With a small tune it will have more torque than the Tundra!!

I sure wish we got this gem here stateside.

    2021 Hilux 4x4--------------VS--------------------2021 Tacoma 4x4
    Engine
    2.8L 4 cyl Turbo Diesel-------------------------------------------3.5L V6
HP 201 hp at 3400 RPM--------------------------------------278 hp at 6000 rpm
Torque 369 ft lbs 1600-2800 rpm-------------------------------265 ft lbs 4600 rpm
    Towing Capacity 7,716 lbs-----------------------------------------6,400 lbs
    GVWR 6,724 lbs ------------------------------------------------5,600 lbs
    Payload 2,110 lbs----------------------------------------------1,155 lbs
    Bed material Steel----------------------------------------------Composite
    MPG Combined 29.4 mpg--------------------------------------------20 mpg

Also anyone that watches Ronny Dahl youtube channel. He has a sweet landcruiser and recently purchased a 2021 Hilux for his fleet. He has some awesome off road road adventure content in Australia..

I don't LOVE the way they look, but that diesel engine and low end torque would sure be nice.

Toyota has already said that they won't be bringing the diesel engines to the truck market due to emissions regulations. The emission requirements seem to decrease the mpg and reliability.

Does not look as good as the Tacoma. With some mods it will look just as good.

I'd pick the new Hilux any day of the week over a Tacoma with plastic bed. The new Hilux is like a mini Tundra with a real truck engine and capacities to back it up.

GVWR is not vehicle weight. Its max operating weight the vehicle can hold. Operating weight is an important factor for many people. The more weight you can hold the better, especially for a truck.

Here are just the weights of the two. Not GVWR. Curb weight.

    Tundra weight: 5470 lbs
    Hilux: 4614 lbs

Although the V8 would make sense but its a gas hog and has less torque than the Hilux. Lexus V8 is at 329 ft/lbs.

    Looks like a ridgeline.
I’ll take the high revving v6 we have over a diesel any day too.

Gimme a bigger gas engine or a turbo. Diesels in small trucks suck.

While I completely disagree with what the OP wants or likes about the HiLux, I would fully support the idea of it coming here just a matter of choice. For such a big market, the choices are surprisingly limited and continually decreasing.

Hell, even those little FWD unibody trucks will be a good thing for the sake of choice. I mean, as goofy as the Ridgeline is to me, Honda seems to be staying with it.
