The 2021 Toyota Hilux is impressive, makes the Tacoma look like a Camry. :(

Here you go. These aren't the greatest photos, but they're from a family member who rented a 2020 TRD OR. Not sure what caused the failure though since it was there before they got the truck.

People forget that the Tacoma was originally developed for the US and wasn't sold outside the US until the 3rd gen.

Large diesels, yes. Small diesels don't have that issue. Chevrolet even claims the Colorado Duramax can start in -30°F (-34°C) without a block heater.

Interesting. Not a common failure, but clearly can happen.

Particularly the large ones. But I think the primary reason is that there just aren't a ton of them around.

Yeah. It's the first one I've seen, which is why I requested the photos. I'm guessing there was an impact of some sort, and not just weight.

Maybe the silver lining is you just need a new composite bed. Not sure if that part is easy to swap.

I'd imagine it wouldn't be that hard. Especially since Toyota puts the bolts on top of the bed instead of the bottom. I know you can easily replace the fenders, so why not the bed?

I have family in NZ, and while I obviously have no experience with the 2021, I've driven and spent good time in several older gens.

    IMG-20190505-WA0002-01.jpg

I really like how they look and the added payload, etc., I really do think It would be the better choice for a lot of you guys on here. Especially the overland guys who bolt on all that extra weight and do real off-roading. The Hilux is amazing AF.

But I'll tell ya, they are not fast trucks. They would really struggle running the freeway speeds across Montana or Nevada. Look, in NZ, it's extremely rare you ever go much over 90kph, and never for more than a few minutes. The roads are so small, narrow and wiggly, 60 to 70kph is "making good time"

And despite how cool I think they are, I personally much prefer my Tacoma for my American driving. How we drive, and how a lot of the rest of the world drives, is pretty different.

The hilux is why I first fell in love with toyota. We drove around Central America to a bunch of places off the beaten path. We were kayaking... im not talking about playing around in a lake. We were trying for some first descents and looking for some big waterfalls (over 70 feet). The hilux we were in was older but it was a beast. I always think tacomas are made for first world countries and the hilux (maybe not the new ones cuz I don't know) is beefed up for shitty roads and harsh terrain.

Just my experience but don't get me wrong I love my 1995 and 2015. The 2015 has super thin metal compared to the 95

I believe the canopy is also an OEM accessory. Only problem with the canopy is it should be chrome.

It's the Exalted Hilux and it's offered everywhere but here so obviously it's superior. Even its butt ugly accessories.

Honestly, the one thing I wish was chrome was my frame. It would help with the rust.

Wasn't trying to be mean or harsh. I guess when I said "I always think....." I guess I really meant the USA. What is driven/sold in Australia? My guess is a hilux because even though I've never been there Australians have some very nice climates and some very harsh climates, hopefully still the best and largest coral reef,, amazing people/beautiful people and crazy people (in a good way mostly). Everywhere has crazy people.

As a Canadian, and on behalf of Australians, and other post-commonwealth peoples, you are definitely not welcome in our third world countries anymore!

I've rented Hiluxes on my travels. They aight, but I'd rather have my Tacoma. Its equipped like it belongs in this millennium, and also I kinda like the safety and emissions standards that it adheres to.
