Am I the only one around here

    Who actually likes the engine?

Rev's like a boss, i find myself bouncing off the rev limit often and feeling like it has another 2k RPM's in it if the computer would let it.

My mom brought her new (to her) '14 RX350 over today, was looking it over, saw it had a 2GR in it also, and was like, wait, dat's basically the same engine in the 'Taco. Higher redline... does anyone know what other physical differences there are? It's rated at like 305 hp at 6400 RPMs. Just got me thinking, about tunes, computers, etc. Seems like there's more to be had here. I know Toyota usually under-tunes their engines for longevity, and that's good, but so does Lexus. My mom's new ride, used, comes with an 8 year unlimited miles everything warranty.

    Anyways.

Add to that, by the way, in the RX350, the interior plastics, fit and finish, latches, knobs, switches, etc., all were basically the same grade (and in some cases the same part) as what's in the Tacoma. But lots of bitching (at least it seems from the auto reviewers) about interior quality. So, what's up with that? Either the Lexus' aren't that great, or the Tacoma isn't that bad? I keep thinking the interior is just fine for what the truck is.

So, there's my random thoughts for the day.

I don't think it's the EXACT same engine ... very very close tho!

    Yes I love this engine.

    16+ Tacoma V6 = 2gr-fks - VVT-i

    14 RX350 V6 - 2gr-fe Dual VVT-i

Same or almost the same HP @ 270 for the RX350

Some difference in fuel injection.. with the Tacoma having port and direct injection
This fuel injection system is not the same as the RX350...

It's a great engine. It's not a truck engine. Just like you wouldn't go putting the 2.5 out of the Camry into the Tundra and calling it "good".

HP alone does not a truck engine make.

High revs are fine in your S2000 on the track. Even they are kinda a pain on the street.

Low RPM torque is what makes drive-ability.

it's absolutely not a great engine yet. but it may be soon once the tune is corrected. i say corrected because it is horribly and obviously incorrect for basically everyone here. maybe except for you, OP. :alien:

    come on OV, bring it!!!

More power is always nice... I'm coming from a 22re powered 4runner, which I'm currently back driving while taco is in the bodyshop. Just don't, the truck feels good, pulls hills in 6th they the 4runner needs 3rd for. Not that it's a great modern comparison, but seems torquey enough. That said a tune to get more out of it would be appreciated, I think it's in the mechanics anyways.

Thanks for the links! I have up reading the more power thread a couple pages in, guess I should have stuck it out!

I have no problems with the motor, works great for me and is in line with the expectations I had for it before I bought the truck.

I'm not sure why people always jump into these threads and say "everybody hates this" or "obviously incorrect for everyone".

There are some people that don't like it and lots of people that do. Seems like every time a potential buyer hops in here asking for opinions after reading "all the negative reviews" the threads flood with people that don't have any problems with the 3rd gen setup.

I was kinda hoping for better mpg, but maybe 75mph on the highway is outside the economy range of the truck o_O

On that, I feel like 6th gear (manual) could have been a higher ratio. Feels similar to my 4runners 5th. I should look up the ratios.

The 3.5 is perfect for the Camry, the Highlander's and Rav4's and Lexus applications. Its out of its element in the Tacoma. That's not what it's strength is. Same as GM's 3.6 is fine in certain applications but not a great truck engine. Say what you want about Ecoboost engines, they sell because they make ungodly amounts of tq at low rpm. Even the 5.7 in the Tundra is perfect for truck duty applications. Purpose built engines have gone away and now it's "how many vehicles can we stick the same engine in to cut costs?".

there have been plenty of complaints about the spread from 5 to 6. it's about 500rpm only. a lot of drivers skip 5th. i use 5th around town where the speed limits keep me running about 2200-2400rpm, but honestly i think the motor as it is, and with the 4.3 rear end, could do totally fine with a 5 speed. or increase the ratio on 6th for more highway-ness... not that it really needs it.

Oh man I was ripping some small trees and such out this weekend and the Tacoma did great. Used 4lo - snapped a 2.5" or sop tow strap, but the chain help. No sure how much more power I would need for this truck... of course more power is always better

The 2GR in the RX is a 2GR-FE, port injected only and rated for ~270hp. The 2GR-FSE is used in the IS350/GS350 and is rated for 306hp. The Tacoma uses the newer 2GR-FKS, which was first used in the GS350 and rated for 311hp. It was then retuned for use in other applications, first the Tacoma, followed by the RX350, and now the Highlander and Sienna which have a 295hp tune.
