It’ll run fine on 87, the compression ratio is 10.2:1 NA. And it’ll still beat the 4.7L all day, and even at night too. It’s about 70lbs lighter with aluminum block so there’s that. Better MPG all around. It has forged rods, too.

I don’t know though which (if either) has aftermarket ECU tuning support.

My 2.7 does everything I need it to...then again I don't tow or do any off roading with it. Most I do is haul a cord of wood or my four wheeler. Gas mileage isn't the greatest but still ok, and it is as reliable as gravity. Paired with the 5 speed it is perfect for me. That said... A V-8 in a little regular cab like mine would be a fun thing!

I am very happy with my 2.7...Guess other engine sizes would depend on your application and use for your Taco.

That would be so bonkers in the tacoma and I'm all for it. My tundra has some scoot, couldn't imagine it in the tacoma.

Wish Toyota would've gave us a diesel option. I don't understand why they put one in the Hilux overseas but not in the Tacoma here. Boggles the brain.

When I had my 08 2.7, I thought it was great off road, especially with the manual trans. Where I didn’t like it was getting on the freeway.

    I have a 15 Tacoma 4.0, a 17 4Runner with a 4.0, and a 16 GX460 with the 4.6 liter.
The Lexus is basically a4Runner with a ton of sound deadening, and that 4.6 is fantastic. It is probably a little much for a lighter vehicle though. The 4.0 is the ultimate Tacoma engine in my opinion.

I'd love to have a turbo diesel option. But, we never will in the US.

4.6 doesnt need premium. Would ABSOLUTELY prefer the 4.6 over the OLD 4.7 with a timing belt.

That stated, they should of put the dual vvti 4.0L in the 2nd gen during the 2012 refresh like they have in the 4 runners.

But. the good ole 4.0L single vvti is simple, easy to work on, gets the job done. Im driving it till the wheels fall off.

Weird.. someone should tell Lexus to quit putting this stuff in their manuals and on their website..

    sketch-1657302327303.jpg sketch-1657302278236.jpg

My comment earlier was based solely on octane requirements. I'd take the 4.6 in a heartbeat if I thought it would run fine on 87.

Edit:. And, maybe it would run fine. I just don't know that for sure. And, I have fond memories of my 4.7. :)

Doesn’t mean it’s necessary. The newer ECUs may just have a different tune to take advantage of it but you still have knock sensors so the ECU will pull timing enough to run fine on 87. Like stated before, maybe slightly worse MPG. But it’s still a low compression NA motor so I don’t know why you keep harping on it.

Not harping on anything. I stated in my text above that my remarks were based on the required octane. If the manufacturer recommends 91, that is what I would use.

Just because you say it will run "fine" doesn't change what the manual says, or how the engine is tuned.

    :tinfoilhat:
recommended, not required. And in the Tundras (same engine) the recommended fuel type is 87.

I totally forgot that they used that in the Tundra also. :anonymous:

    I stand corrected.

    Happy Friday, guys!

Its definitely possible that the Lexus tune is a slightly more aggressive tune that "requires" 91 to meet its claimed HP numbers. That stated, it seems like there are uh, typos in the manual for the gx460 as others on the web have noted the same discrepancy even though the tundra motor and GX 460 motor are the same.
