The 2nd Gen. should have been offered with a 3.5L and a 5.0L

Why not get a Dodge Dakota with one of the two V8s offered or one of the many V6s?

This makes sense. But, I also don't know offhand what the horsepower and torque specifications are for the tundra version.

Either way, I would be happy to trade my 1GR for either of the v8s discussed. I find the 4.0 to be adequate, but sometimes miss that V8 torque.

I run 87 in my GX460, and there are no issues. I ran it in the last one I had too. Never knocked a single time.

+1 it really would of been nice to have the v8. I think the likely turbod inline 4 we will see in the next gen taco will be noice and make similar power figures more efficiently than the 4.6 v8.

The specs on the Lexus version of what we're supposed to get look really good! Peak torque from 1700 - 3600 RPM's sounds awesome!

I planned on keeping my '19 4Runner forever. But, if they really nail it with the 6th gen, I'll probably switch after the first year bugs are worked out.

Doesn't matter if you are right or wrong. What matters is you're 8 years beyond the last 2nd gen.

Don't dwell in the past, it can't be undone.

    And yes, it's Friday.

Wasting electrons with what-should-have-been chatter? I get it.

But it's like saying PT Losers should have had a v6 and the Thunderbird redux and the Prowler should have had v8s.

Everyone knows it's true, but it doesn't matter. :D

Agreed - I feel very fortunate to have found a 2.7L 4x4 with the 5 speed manual. Haven't hauled wood with my Tacoma yet - but plan to.
I think the drivetrain would be up to the task within reason. I'm impressed with the fuel economy which is important now. As with other manual transmission vehicles I've had I have exceeded the EPA estimates a bit. Last 2 tanks averaged over 24 mpg.

    100%

    If you wanted 2005 Tacoma with a 3.5 or a 5.0, around the same time, I think 04 Dodge offered a 4.7 V8 and later a 3.7 V6.

Years ago I had a '97 Dodge Dakota with the 3.9 V6 (version before the 3.7). It was a 5 speed manual and RWD. It wasn't hard to spin the wheels on the grass on level ground without trying. I will say, that truck was solid. No rattles whatsoever. IMO the 1st gen Dakota was good looking. It had a 6 1/2' bed, but of course less than 48" between the wheel wells.

There have been rumors it would be built again for several years now. We know the Ranger came back, but IMO nothing compares to the Tacoma in styling and reliability for a mid sized truck. If I won the lottery... I'd look for the same configuration I have, which means I think nothing newer than a 2018(?) - 2.7L and 5 speed manual. It seems the trend is turbos, automatics, and hybrids.

I've had three Dakotas, because I couldn't afford a new Tacoma at the time. 93 2wd with the 3.9 v6,my step-dad bought it new,had 190k when I got it and I put 20k on it. Drove like new with ice cold ac. Bought a new 05 ext cab Dakota with the 3.7 v6. Most gutless turd of an engine ever, plagued with issues as well, couldn't get rid of it fast enough. Bought a 94 after that ext cab 4x4 with the 318. Had it 4yrs only oil changes. Still,my 4.0 would run away from that 318.
