I've heard a few times of some swimming holes around Bishop but never had the pleasure myself. I've spent most of my time in Hot Creek, Mammoth and the Owens north of Benton so don't really know the area around Bishop. Instead of asking outright where this pictured spot is I spent my lunch doing some research. I've got some ideas and pins on my map to check out for the next trip :)

Drive around in the Valley enough and you'll be surprised what you find.

That’s been my MO as of late. After 35+ yrs of coming up but pretty much going to the same spots I’ve been trying to explore more. It’s a big part of why I bought my Tacoma.

How was it in terms of cleanliness? Last time I was up at Alabama Hills there was trash (and specifically lots of toilet paper) all over the place. It really wasn't fairing well with all the increased (and inconsiderate) visitors.

It was pretty clean wherever we stopped. Didn't notice any trash or discarded/dumped items anywhere.

There's a guy by the name of Dylan who operates a non-profit called Public Lands United Cleanup. He's been in that neck of the woods doing his thing. I don't know if he hit AH but June Lake is where he is/was this week.

I'm glad to see more people spending time picking up after others.

    Hi,

I’m moving to mammoth this September and was wondering if anyone lives in the Eastern Sierra. Would love to connect with people here. I have a Kimbo camper coming for my Taco in February so will need some pointers on the upgrades I need to do before it arrives.

welcome to TW and this thread.
Kimbo looks to be cool camper. I'd think your Tacoma will need rear leaf spring upgrades and an air-bag system placed to enable an adequate carry of this camper, for starts.
hopefully Kimbo can provide realistic suspension needs for the Tacoma. I'd suggest contacting Deaver spring for a possible custom leafs based on weight of Tacoma, and its specific rear axle load with the Kimbo mounted.

I would think suspension upgrades consistent with the weight of your loaded camper, maybe extra batteries to keep you powered up when out camping. Possibly add solar charging capability.

    Pretty cool camper too!

Welcome to TW. I just went through a similar build with a Tundra and ended up going with custom springs through Alcan in CO (Deaver is definitely on par). I sent them the empty and loaded weights (front axle/rear axle/gross) of the truck and they dialed in the springs I wanted, no complaints.

VALLEJO, Calif., — August 30, 2021. To better provide public and firefighter safety due to the ongoing California wildfire crisis, USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region is announcing a temporary closure of ALL National Forests in California

ˆˆˆ just announced today :annoyed:, do you guys think coyote flats trail will be patrolled/ blocked off?

Yes, and I wouldn’t screw with it:

A violation of these prohibitions is punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 for an individual or $10,000 for an organization, or imprisonment for not more than 6 months, or both.

Obviously it is very frustrating but things are just crazy out there. I remember almost 20 years ago how big a deal it was when a fire in the Southern Sierras burned almost the entire summer and grew past 100,000 acres. Now we have multiple 100k acre fires in a year and a single fire still less than 50% contained at over 750k acres.

Sadly a significant fraction of people are dumb-asses and the number of dumb-asses that show up for a Labor Day weekend almost guarantees new fires combined with difficult to evacuate crowds. The crowds themselves are a problem even for a naturally occurring fire.

I remember that 100k+ fire I mentioned above from years back was started accidentally by a person who just had to cook a hot dog for lunch in a fire restricted area near the Kern River. We got to choke on smoke for the whole damn summer because of that hot dog.

It’s the whole “why we can’t have nice things” writ large.

Yeah probably not smart to take a go at if it's closed.. is monache meadows part of the closure as well?

Anyone willing to share any trails they know that offers the same or higher difficulty trails and wide open dispersed camping? It can be anywhere in SoCal or even AZ (was possibly thinking Sedona). I want to escape some of the crowds easy to get to spots will have and not trying to camp in 100 degree weather either

I’m heading to flagstaff in a couple weeks. Might do some camping out there since there are a few areas for dispersed camping.
