I've seen the conversions in Jeep, yeah too pricey to drop it off and pick it up the next day! Lol!

Shame they won't just do it from the factory and be done with it. TDI VWs don't have massive $25k additional MSRP. It might add a couple grand but that you could justify over a decade of ownership or if your fleet/business was all diesel too.

I was helping my friend with his little Mitsubishi 4 cyl diesel forklift and it got me thinking. Must be only around 40 hp but the torque is tremendous. Prob need 12 gears to get to 70 mph!

yeah....all about how much money you want to spend chasing mpg's. I can't make the numbers work. Sure, if money was no object I do it just as a novelty.

My buddy let me drive his VW TDI Sportwagon for a day....it sure was nice, getting 40 mpg to boot too!

I never did buy this terrible engine/ trans combo in 4 wd after trying it out. Had three 4 cylinder manuals in 4 wd and all were quite decent. Never bought an auto four and never will in a truck. There is no passing gear with the 4 speed auto once you hit 60 mph. A six speed auto for those who like them with this 2.7 motor will make a world of difference in drivability. Still not a hauler but perfectly appropriate for at least mediocre performance. The five speed auto with the six is a very good combo. A six speed would be better and will prove to be. The 3.5 will need it.

I love these blanket statements from people who by their own admission have never owned one. All I can say is, "You people who think you know everything are really annoying to those of us that do."

I guess it doesn't take much to annoy you and I guess you figured I never drove one IN 4WD or you need a little remedial reading to see my opinion was about the 4 wd models as stated earlier. Before purchasing my off road, I drove one several times. Does driving one count ? Or maybe you think everyone should buy a car before they drive one. It was woefully underpowered trying to accelerate without flooring it over 55 to 66 mph...... Now, wtf can you say differently ? I had three 2.7 liter four manual five speeds in 4 wd before that were no where near as pitiful. You own an 4 speed automatic four with 4 wd ? If not, you have nothing to say either. If you do enlighten me instead of just being annoyed. Oh, excuse me...you are now claiming you know everything because you own a 4 wd wannabe a Wee Runner...in 2wd. Now, if you call making more noise a passing gear.......

Well then, I would think BKill would be more annoyed at the educational system in TX then the idea someone dislikes a four speed auto in a 4 wd Taco.

As mentioned, I have had several 4 cylinder manuals and all were tolerable...just barely. The 4 wd Auto borders on being unsafe for use I give it with it's inability to pass safely, even with no load. We have lots of hills and the so called passing gear produces nothing but a change in noise.

Yet people keep buying them and Toyota continues to produce. Different strokes for different folks.

I'm a big fan of the 2.7 with a 5 speed. I've loudly stood on the table and banged pans together here and in other threads on their behalf.

I know when I went from the stock 215/70s up to a set of 225/75 Wranglers, I was absolutely shocked at how much power went byebye. Not so much that the truck wasn't still perfectly roadworthy, but even just that bit of increase was a very, VERY noticeable difference.

As I've said in here before, the 4 cyl 2.7 isn't the problem as shipped. It's either the transmission or driver expectations that're horked after the fact. When you start making changes to the base, things go sideways *fast*.

I know you guys wre mostly 4x4 but my lil 5 lugger 2.7 5spd had 215/7x-15 tires and 3.31 rear gears and could cruise at 50 in second gear!

Was it dangerous? Eh? Was it stupid to suffer with it? Yes!

    Gears, gears, gears!

"Take, not are". I think he meant ARRRRRGH! Pirate style.

Gearing does mean a lot. But even my stock '06, it wasn't uncommon to take 4th gear up past 75 in passing situations. And that ain't really running the motor very hard either, barely passing 3K RPM.

So, I guess the 3.31 rear could use some love. I'm gonna look into moving that up at tad...

Exactly. Well said. Nothing bears out your observations more then the highway mileage comparison between the four and the six. In some applications, like 4 wd, auto, there s little difference and even leans towards the six when working...which might be a consideration of all. Off road, I found I liked the four a lot. Low range is a great equalizer and better weight distribution helped too.

Stock tiny tires with 4.10 felt right to me. Normal street gearing. With actual 30" tires 4.88. The engine isn't burdened with these ratios and tire sizes. It actually feels zippy, not like it wants to shove a piston thru the head.

I am assuming that is a 2WD, yeah?

I like the 2.7, just doesn't have enough oomph for me. Since mileage is so close compared the V6, don't want to take the power drop penalty. Basically I want decent mileage for the work commute, and enough power to pull mountain passes towing a dirt bike trailer and all gear on the weekends.

I guess you could turbo it, but why waste the time, money, and effort when you could of had a V6? :D

It's hard to imagine that if nothing is done to the four, the mileage in the six may well be better on the highway, by a significant amount. Around town and at speeds less then 65, the six speed should help a lot.

Cause the V6 has arguably the worst manual setup you could ask for. I'd rather get beaten about the head & neck with a leaf rake than drive that 6 speed.

Now, if I could get the same 5 speed as the 4cyl has, I'd look at it.

    (Also, yes, mine's a 2wd)
