Lots of these guys giving you numbers $2800+ are most likely including the cost of the gears themselves.

Labor alone should be anywhere between $1k-$2k. $2300 is a little ridiculous. I've been calling around for quotes the past couple weeks and settled on a shop to do it for $1500 with my supplied parts. Lowest quote I got was $1200, highest was $1900. This is in San Diego btw.

I'm scheduled to have my gears installed this week. I'm in the SF Bay Area and was quoted $1,900 for labor. This was one of the highest quotes I got, but also by one of the most recommended/reputable shops in the area.

I’m looking for a shop in Los Angeles area to install my gears. I’m in the San Gabriel valley but will travel a little bit for a shop that will do it right the first time. Do you guys have any recommendations?

Has anyone measured a difference in acceleration times with 4.88 or 5.29 gears on any stock/modded set up with no other variables changed before/after the gears? ? 0-60, 50-80, 1/4, anything? I am just curious. I am considering another 3rd gen now that it seems like it's a lot better if you just suck it up and commit to the gears...I'd be dropping the truck off straight from the dealer.

I’m curious as well the difference in top in speed (not that I would be hitting it any) between gears and stock. I live on Gulf Coast and 80 - 85 mph is common traffic speeds.

oof, must be the cost of living in the SF Bay Area then. The cheapest I could find just for the install alone was around $1400.

I know not my comment quoted, but I understand the purpose for the re-gear. But how much lost on top end can be expected with 4.88 and 5.27?

With no additional weight added basic stock truck.

What do you mean? Gears are a torque multiplier, they increase torque and power

Yes, but I keep reading where your overall top speed will be diminished. Is that not the case?

Not that I have seen but I don't drive my truck 90mph, there are some anecdotal anomalies, at the end of the day the truck governs out

Thanks, in some comments I got the impression of a give and take compromise and just wondered how much.

Would 4.88 be a better choice if I did nothing more than 33” and stayed under 2” lift?

I don't think so. Ive been on 5.29s for about 1k miles, and I don't see any reason why I would have gone 4.88. Maybe mpgs would be better on the highway with the 4.88/33" tire combo than 5.29/33" combo, but I don't know this for sure. 5.29s just make the truck go for you. No more watching the 90s Plymouth minivan gap you at the red light. The truck just isn't frustrating to drive anymore.
