I know not my comment quoted, but I understand the purpose for the re-gear. But how much lost on top end can be expected with 4.88 and 5.27?

With no additional weight added basic stock truck.

What do you mean? Gears are a torque multiplier, they increase torque and power

Yes, but I keep reading where your overall top speed will be diminished. Is that not the case?

Not that I have seen but I don't drive my truck 90mph, there are some anecdotal anomalies, at the end of the day the truck governs out

Thanks, in some comments I got the impression of a give and take compromise and just wondered how much.

Would 4.88 be a better choice if I did nothing more than 33” and stayed under 2” lift?

I don't think so. Ive been on 5.29s for about 1k miles, and I don't see any reason why I would have gone 4.88. Maybe mpgs would be better on the highway with the 4.88/33" tire combo than 5.29/33" combo, but I don't know this for sure. 5.29s just make the truck go for you. No more watching the 90s Plymouth minivan gap you at the red light. The truck just isn't frustrating to drive anymore.

    Truck stuff
With 5.29's the trucks ECU cuts off the speed to somewhere around 85/86 mph from what I've found in my research. 4.88's would allow a higher top speed but no clue what the cut off changes to. The next OVtune update being released, the 2.0 tune, is going to eliminate that. Not sure where the cut off will be with ovtune after since hes only given the beta with the gearing settings changed out to a few people to test so far and it was strictly to see if he successfully removed the cut off for people with 5.29's. The standard beta without the gearing settings is available for others.

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
My friend put 4.88s in his rig with 33s. Unfortunately that didn’t stop the trans from hunting for gears. Needless to say he was pissed and after riding in mine with 5.29s on 33s.
    He ended up getting 5.29s.
Living in ATL, you have to drive at speeds on the hwy, or you will get flat out run over.
I am rolling 33 KM2s (heavy as hell) and I got no issues pulling mtn grades now, nor does the driveline feel over geared.
I roll at 70-80 with no issues. At 80 with my size tires the RPMs are just touching 2500, and it keeps that gear up grades.
When I put on 34/35 the RPMs will go down slightly.
I like where the truck keeps the RPMs now.’makes the truck feel more responsive. Before is was just bogging in low RPMs, not I feel like I am in a sweet spot.
On a side note I rode in a friends truck that had the OV tune, but no gears. Was not impressed, as while it did hold gears longer, the truck still felt under geared to me.

You will appreciate it. Tacoma still isn’t a speed demon but you will appreciate the response you get when you need it.

As far as hunting for gears, most of my driving is on flat ground in SoCal. The truck will still shift between 5-6 periodically, probably more because of my driving style, but it absolutely isn’t “hunting” like it did with stock gearing. The truck will actually hold 5th or 6th when I want to go fast (wanting it to downshift) and it will pull from where it’s at. Pretty cool as it would never do that prior to regear.

@Built2Ride I will say that 5.29s with stock tune is fine. 3rd gear has that weird flat spot like usual, but it’s easy to drive. I have been running the 5.29 beta tune with the gears and it is much better. I thought the tune was ok prior to regearing and I felt the changes, but it didn’t fix the truck. Regearing and then driving around on stock 04b31 tune was fine, but regear paired with ovtune is definitely a better driving experience. Again, we all know that this truck has it’s downfalls when it comes to power down low, but the feel is much better with the tune. If I hadn’t already purchased ovtune last year, I’d probably not miss it, but since I’ve got it and can run it, I’ll honestly say I’m glad I have it. I’m active duty and almost out of the door again for deployment (and a full time student) so I don’t get to use the truck off-road, so I can’t comment on its performance there. For those interested in the tune, just find someone who will let you drive their truck and see for yourself!

With your friend's 4.88 gears in his truck, did he have OV Tune or was he still on the stock programming?

I appreciate your input. It’s good to hear that your experience with the Tune has increased the drive ability. I will also say the new gears made my Offroad experience way better. In low range this thing crawls now, before it felt like it required a lot more effort on my part.

It's unfortunate that you made this post and that it received likes, because it confirms how clueless this forum is when it comes to data. Re-gearing a vehicle will impact its ability to accelerate quickly. I am not getting another Tacoma to take it down the track, but acceleration stats would validate how much these trucks need to be re-geared. It's a valuable metric that would substantiate the videos from all the wannabe YouTube bloggers posting about how the truck "feels right" after doing this, while a shop owner is explaining basic gearing concepts for them. And for this forum.

Clueless? It was a joke. The reason for his comment and the likes is because the OP crawls his truck, nothing more.

This forum has been nothing but on point. To make a statement such as the one above, really is a waste of your time and ours.

Bring on the Data that you seek, and we will add it in here. If we can understand it is a different story..what do I know I am just a landscaper lol
