I have stopped looking at my mileage my shit is a tank now.
But I will say my mileage did get better with the 5.29s, because I was pegging my shit out so much just trying to stay at speed. My truck is fully armored and I pull a stainless steel trailer.
Gears saved my ass today though. I would have been in a pickle for sure.
Truck would have turned into a sled at some sketchy ass places.

This 5.29 thread vs the 4.88 thread is so mind numbing it’s unreal! The more I read the more I can’t make up my mind which route to go. Through a ton of reading though I did find a post by joecova that said he’d never have 5.29 then see he started the 5.29 thread :)

    A2F38D8A-3E9A-459D-BB30-DD87BF71B044.jpg

Anyway back to reading need to decide by tomorrow when I place my order through ecgs. Debate is I’ll never go larger than 285/75 so thinking 4.88 paired with the OVTune I already have will be plenty sufficient for my truck as it will never be super heavy other than adding sliders along with the slimline hybrid and high clearance wings with smittybuilt x20 winch I already have. Honestly the only reason I’m still considering 5.29 is because of towing as 4.88 seem plenty sufficient for my daily needs and weekend playing with truck.

There was a time when 5:29's were not available :notsure: Maybe @JoeCOVA was making reference "never gonna happen" to that? But, now they are available...

Ya that was back in 2017 when Nitro said they would never make 5.29 and that it would be too low. At that time I resigned to the fact that we were stuck with 4.88s. My patience paid off and we have 5.29s. Jumped on them as soon as I could when they released.

might be a stupid question, but for the break-in period they say its 500 miles... since the re-gear is for both front and rear, are we to engage 4HI for 500 miles ? to break in the front gears?

I'm about to start putting truck together 2.5 kings, Dakar rear 285/75/17's cmc. Super excited I know I'm am regearing 5.29 no question a must. However I am gonna be rocking this build on stock gears for a month or so while my account replenishes lol. My question is this....How bad is it gonna be? I can imagine and probably have a good idea but has anyone actually done it that can share exactly how drastically bad it is gonna suck?ty in advance

@newdles , I was in the same boat just a couple months ago - trying to decide between 4.88s and 5.29s and completely going back and forth. From everything I've read/heard, I went with the following guidelines (ymmv):

    Go with 4.88s if:
    -Tires are 33" or less
    -Stock weight
    -Mostly highway driving

    Go with 5.29s if:
    -Tires are 33" or higher
    -Additional weight

I have 33s and a lot of extra weight and went with 5.29s.

Damn, how much weight do you have? I'm getting 17-18 winter, 18-19 summer on 33s, stock gears and armor.

Soooo......I asked this question at the shop that I just re-geard at, and was told that I didn't need to do anything to break in the front. In fact, the owner recommended that I did NOT put it in 4HI to try and break in the gears as he said that it would create too much heat in the front and may be detrimental to the front gears.

I've seen a lot of conflicting information regarding the break-in of the fronts. What's the right recommendation? *shrug*

I went 5.29 about 1500 miles ago with heavy e load 33’s with very little added weight maybe 300lbs total. And I do a lot of highway driving 70-75mph. It’s great. Truck holds gears very well uphills and has tons of get up and go power. I’m averaging around 16-17mpg highway on long all highway mile trips and around 12-15mpg in town. I’d prolly get better mileage if I slowed down on the highway to 60~65.

I do plan to add a bit more weight. Aluminum Skids. And tow a travel trailer so 5.29 was what I decided on.

    Truck stuff
Ive on 285's, am pretty heavy and still have stock gears for the past 1-2 years now. I need to re gear bad, my trucks slow add crap and of road I need top use 4lo way more than like just top climb steep grades I used to fly up with smaller tires and less weight in 2hi or 4hi. It's driveable but I'm sure its only because I'm used to it now that it doesnt drive me crazy. I will be getting gears this year sometime.

Only way to break in gears is to have them spin so that it polishes the surface. Only way for the front to spin is to have it in 4hi.
