My recommendation is get 5.29's, throw on some good tunes and just enjoy the ride at 70. After you get a few hundred dollars worth of speeding tickets you quickly realize it's not worth it to go full Jeff Gordon mode all over the place.

Also, I drove my truck completely stock from colorado to missouri last summer, and even stock it does not like holding 75mph. A halfway decent headwind causes it to downshift, and mpg's really start to tank. I just put the cruise on 70 and let it roll.

Knock on wood, I’ve never gotten a speeding ticket and I don’t speed to drive like an ass or anything. It’s just when you hop on I-90 going out to my house, it’s pretty much everyone going 70-80 and I hate being that turtle in the road. I’m sure the California guys know what I’m talking about.

I’ve found the exact same thing. The stock gearing struggles to keep the truck at 75mph. A slight incline or a stiff headwind and it downshifts to 4th gear and stays in that gear for miles while fuel economy tanks. I’m probably going to re-gear my near stock truck so I can do 75mph without a problem. 70mph is just not acceptable, especially with speed limits in the western US being 75 & 80mph.

To each their own. I run CO, WY, and MT at 65-70mph. The speed limit may be 80 but no reason to drive it and there isn’t enough traffic to push you, there are miles in between cars.

Like others have said, just put it in CC put some tunes on and enjoy the ride.

    But go for it!

5.29s and 35s, my truck will hold 80 no problem and does it with CC. Just did trip from SLC to Big Bear CA. I don't care about gas milage, 14MPG on the freeway with CC set to 80. 80 MPH in 6th is 2600 RPM

I disagree. Way too many know it alls on this site, who presume to know what's best for everyone. It's annoying as hell. To each their own!

MPG data only applies to the truck that produced it. There are a million factors that dictate mileage. Jesus the cult like mentality on here is absurd.

He's been pretty negative ever since he entered this thread. It seemed like he originally was looking for advice and didn't like the advice we had to give so I'm not sure why he's still sticking around.

If you're that hellbent on 4.88's just get it then and leave all the drama elsewhere.

Thing is, we're not all biased here. There are special circumstances where 4.88's is recommended, but for the majority of tacoma owners 5.29's makes more sense unless you're Jeff Gordon.

Can someone tell me what would be the regular circumstances where 4.88's would be better? I'm asking cause I'm not ever going over 33's. Never. And I probably wouldn't have much as far as weight. Don't care about the mpg's since its never a daily driver.

Edit: I should have mentioned mine is an A/T, sorry.

I have a MT. I think 4.88 are better for me. Unless the gear calc I was using was wrong.

4.88 is usually the recommendation for MT

People with Manual Trans would be better off with 4.88s.
I run 33s, but choose 5.29 because of the extra weight/armor especially when I am on camping trips. My front end alone is 220 lbs heavier than stock (constant weight). The rear, I have about 140lbs constant more than stock and add another 200-300lbs on camping trips. That's without a steel rear bumper.

You may be better off with 4.88 in my opinion, but I have heard guys that run stock w/ 5.29 loving it. It's the same price to do it so I would go 5.29 in case you do want to add weight
