I posted a review on YouTube “gen 3 Tacoma with 5.29 and 35” tires”. Much more responsive with 5.29z. I’ll give detailed review here shortly

Easy break in so far. I’m about 250 miles into it. Just drive easy.

Dude! Just what I was looking for. My mind is set on 5.29s. Great job on the review. Very simple and to the point.

Shawn is local to me and brought his 2016 Taco rear 8.75" elocker 3rd over to me for new bearings and 529 Nitro Gears.
There is a blue and a black plastic connector on the 3rd. The blue is the 12 volt activation wire and the black is the sensor wire.
    These parts came from http://justdifferentials.com

Life would be simpler if the dang connector would come apart like it is supposed to.....this is the 2nd 8.75" elocker that has been stubborn so it was a simple matter of cutting the wires
and solder them later on. I am fortunate that Hughes Aircraft allowed me to get 2 solder certificates during my 9.9 year stay there......you would not believe some of
the unique things I did to some of the test missiles....the "bodywork" .......and the soldering also.

But first let's take some paint tests on the original 430 factory gears and see how well they set them up.
This is the drive side...it is nicely centered and has the proper depth look to it. Nice job Toyota.

Here is the coast......favoring the outside heel just a little but it looks like the right depth so good job there too Toyota.
I could not apply as much pressure as I would have like to (because of the dang square flange)
so it could have "looked better" with more pressure on the paint.

The pinion bearing preload was about 5 inch/pounds and the carrier bearing preload was about 5 inch/pounds....the backlash was right at .007" when I spot checked about 8 teeth...... so this diff was actually set pretty good from the factory:thumbsup:

This is very similar to the Australian Harrop elockers. Same stop tab design and same electromagnet coil engagement mechanism. It's an Eaton elocker ;)
There's between 1 and 2mm of play on the tabs which is normal.

This is the black connector that senses when the locker is fully engaged. There is no reason to remove this one for this install.
There is an o-ring behind it so, Shawn, you did not mess up a thing when you twisted it a little while you tested the fitting for removal.;)

Additional note- This connector cannot be removed anyways....at least until the elocker center carrier is lifted out of the way(interference issues otherwise)
    IMG_2826.jpg

An interesting mechanical method of sensing the lock ring movement.

Those 12 flange style bolts were on TIGHT with Toyota loctite. The Earthquake made easy work of it though.

hmmmmmm.....no way to get a puller behind this carrier bearing.....

    IMG_2831.jpg

And this side is almost as tight but I might have good luck with the blue cup style.....

    IMG_2832.jpg

Well, Itried the 4 possible sizes I have here and no go....not a proper fit to power off this bearing
so had to resort to a dremel and a tiny cutting wheel.

The new Nitro 529 went on with only some light taps. No boiling water needed :)

92 ft/lb and red loctite on all 12.

Press the new Koyo bearings on and this end is done.

So what about rim size? I am planning on running 20x14 on my 2018 mall crawler with 33's maybe 35's depending on clearance with coilovers. With that much weight of wheel and tire, you think 5.29 with a 33 would be better than 4.88? My first gen had 5.29's and with the 20x12 and 35s seemed like it noticed power loss compared to when it had 16x9 with 35's. It was an auto as well. I also ran for a short time 20x12 with 33's, but I hated it at hwy speeds. It was really high rpms and got terrible MPG's. Any input would be good, but keep the bashing to a minimum, Save that for my build thread once it goes down.

Even with that additional weight, your diameter is still the same. And if you're not going up and down steep climbs, 4.88 is probably better suited for your needs.
