5.29s aren’t softer, it’s the same material and there is no empirical evidence that substantiates the difference in strength. The pinion head size is negligible between the two.

Does anyone know what size socket is required to remove the ADD when pulling the front diff apart. It’s an E torx bolt. I’m guessing e12 or e14 but just want to confirm. I’m pulling the diffs out tomorrow evening.

I just installed 5.29's over the weekend and noticed the same. I just re-flashed to the OvTune 5.29 + 33's specific tune with a 285/75/17 tire + 400lbs of extra crap on the truck and noticed that the RMPS are higher prior to shifting....much better IMO

Ordering my 5.29s soon. Both Revolution and Nitro don’t have complete kits due to shortage of bearings. Not a big deal I can wait.

Question though, I’ve seen conflicting information regarding Nitro and Revolution. Most Comments here for Revolution saying they don’t have any whining noises. From my research these gears come from the same manufacturer. Sounds like if you get whining noises it was due to a bad install. Opinions?

Does anybody know a good and trustworthy shop to do a 5.29 regear in the Bay Area California? Preferably a place that is pocket friendly

I got Revolution gears and they have a K stamped on them. Which means they are a cha gear and high quality. I imagine whining could be due to install but it just depends. I have had gears in a few rigs(strictly Offroad only) that have had noisy gears even when the gear set up is perfect and all new bearing were installed My factory 3.91 gears made noise and the set up on the gears looked really nice. From what I have gathered, Yukon makes their own gears which are made in China, and revolution uses cha gears, and I think nitro either buys from the same place as revolution or they might make there own but I doubt it.

Curious to hear feedback from those that did the 5.29 with REM polishing, the installer in my area is saying they tend to be louder and the noise carries into the topper ( where the dogs hang out) into the cab. They say the reason is the natural breaking in allows for a better fit between the gears which in return is a smoother and more precise fit with a quieter result after the break in .

Thanks everyone for any and all feedback.

That really doesn’t make sense. When backlash is set wether or not it’s rem polished it’s the same backlash setting, if it’s set between .006-.010 it’s not going to change because of rem. Now wether or not they make more noise I can’t tell you right now. Every vehicle besides my truck which is getting gears right now had a loud exhaust, motor, whining tcase, whining trans and I couldn't hear my gears at all.

Anyone know who makes a good set of 5.29 gears for the 2nd gen (6 spd MT if that matters) w/ an E locker??? Nitro site says they only go up to 4.88’s.

Just ordered my third and reverse clamshell from ECGS. Can't wait to get these things in there!

For those that have done the install themselves, any tips? Everything looks pretty straightforward from what I've read.

Had my 5.29 on for about 250 miles now and driving home smelled like gear oil. Looked underneath the front and it's leaking somewhere for sure. Installer believes it's the seal, is there anywhere else I should be checking before picking up a new seal?

I called ECGS about my small leak, and they said it was normal to sweat some gear oil. I've got some oil on my diff breather too, so the leak might be from that. I may have filled the diff too much, but still not totally sure if there is an actual leak, or if it's coming 100% from the breather.

You need an E14 socket for the ADD, and only remove the two lower 19mm bolts from the lower ball joint to knuckle and hang them up out of the way. Makes it far less to disassemble the front and you leave the CV axles all bolted up to the hubs, the diff breather kinda sucks to get out and the wiring harness clips are tedious to remove but fairly easy. Just did mine the other day.

Your looks like the CV seal Possibly the fill plug crush washer as well but those usually don’t leak it’s probably just the cv seal and the leak is pushing it back toward the fill plug. I would tighten the fill plug, clean it and drive it a Short distance and recheck.
