    Nah, there is no reason to develope lower diff gears even if rock crawling. Most rock crawlers don’t even use the stock transmission. A lot of jeeps for example run GM truck transmissions like the SM465 that has a first gear ratio of 6.33 which is twice as low as our 3rd gen 3.6 ratio.

    The next step would be transmission and transfer case swaps

    Ya a tacobox would help a lot if they ever get made. I can’t really find anyone running one on older trucks and 4 runners.

    I’m on the list to get one but who knows if they will ever make them.

    Transfer case for sure would be the way to go for crawling of course, but if you drive your truck to the trail then the 5.71 would be where the money is. I cant imagine how long it would take to get up to speed with 40’s and only have 5.29s. I am guessing big mike would be the guy to ask.

    For me personally after having my previous crawler I would not go past 5.29s. Main reason being I will never go past 35’s. I would love to get a taco box, I would probably just get a second set of stock gears. 5:1 with both transfers in low with an auto is plenty low enough for me. I might want to go lower in the transfers if I had a manual just to take it easy on the clutch.

    I have the same tire size as well and still debating on 4.88 or 5.29. Mines is daily driven here in Hawaii (about 35 miles a day with some gradual hills going one way) and I tow a 19’ boat 2-3 times a month. You guys have any input or suggestions on what ratio you think is best? Speed limit on our freeways is 60mph and I usually drive like an old man lol.

    Yep. I've taken my dash apart a few times but it's easy. I'm doing in next week to reprogram the calibrator. I can time it if you'd like. I don't think you will have any difficulty, it's a 1 beer task (2 if you have pretzels that make you extra thirsty)

    Alright, its been a bit. Got the 5.29s installed a few weeks ago, drove around, swapped the fluids at 250ish miles. Fluid came out super clear/no major chunks, just small normal filings. Here are some pics from the install:

    Auto truck and 285/75/17 (34's) are what I'll be moving to. I do off-road but 95% of driving will be on road so trying to decide if 5.29 is overkill. I do have bumper, winch, diamondback cover, sliders, skids, etc. adding weight as well. I'm sure I'd be happy with 4.88 or 5.29 but just trying to figure out what would be ideal. The problem is nobody really has the experience of both gear ratios to give a definitive answer :rofl:
