Trying again with some better gear marking compound.

I assume it’s the 8.4” diff. What size is your pinion shim? What is backlash? How much preload on pinion, and how much preload on carrier?

The pinion shim is .070 I think
It's an 8" front clamshell from an FJ cruiser
Backlash don't know how yet I have not done that yet. I have the original crush sleeve in there now and I just tightened it up
As for carrier preload. I'm at a complete loss there.

Pretty much gotta have backlash in spec or close before you can run a pattern, otherwise if you get a good pattern but the backlash is out, you'll screw up the pattern by getting the backlash right.

For aftermarket gear sets like nitro and Yukon I typically see 0.072” pinion shim. Throw the original crush sleeve in the trash, it’s one time use only, you’ll need a new one. You’ll need to follow the guidelines for preload for new and used bearings, at least get it close. New bearings I put 12-15”#’s for pattern check and 5-8”#’ on the carrier to pattern check. Backlash needs to be between 6-8 thousandths for pattern check. Once all of those are met, then you can apply paint. The lid must be torqued to spec to run a paint check. If you can’t do any of that, then hand it off to someone who can so you don’t destroy your diff.

so a new chush sleeve did come in the install kit
question hear is how to check carrier bearing preload with a clamshell type diff?
backlash looks like a need a special attatchment for the dial indicator
i was putting 4 bolts in with a 3/8 impact but good to know and will do it that way
    absolutely great advise. thank you.

you check backlash with a test gauge through the oil drain hole. Make sure the test gauge is in inches and not MM or you’ll have to convert.

thank you and in a video on u tube someone had said you can check it at the flange but it will be doubled. so what you get at the pinion flange just divide it by 2.
but have not found anywhere where it says how to check carrier bearing pre load on a clamshell style diff. I guess its by feel

don’t check at flange. Check on RG teeth only. To get carrier preload, get your pinion preload number, then put carrier in, and check preload on pinion again. Carrier preload is the difference betweeen the two

Thank you. Will have time in a couple of days to try, also looking for a solid spacer for the pinion, have to make a tool to hold the pinion flange, have to make a tool to press the pinion bearing on, set up bearings are in it now.. lots to do

I use 6” angle iron to hold the assembly upright in the press to get the pinion out. And I use smaller angle iron clamped to the bench to hold the pinion flange in place to tighten the nut

Got my regear done yesterday. I’m in the break in period so driving super slow but damn…. What a huge difference. My truck feels “lighter” with 35s now. Doesn’t struggle when going up grades. Before the regear my truck was a complete slug with 35s. But I’m sure you guys knew all this. Can’t wait till I’m done with the break in period.

when people say that’s the first mod you should do if you ever planning on going with bigger tires, I agree 100%.

Dropped my truck off for a set of 5.29s today. Been trying to make due without the upgrade since I bought it but finally had enough. Can't wait to get it back and see what all the fuss is about!

Got my truck back with the 5.29s and have completed my break in. I have 33" tires and no significant weight adds to the truck other than the rock sliders. I am very happy with the gearing, perfect in my opinion and will give me lots of room for upgrades in weight and tire size down the road.
