The 5.29 Mega Thread!!

thanks - saw some of your specs with wheel size above, but sorry if i missed this elsewhere, but did you recalibrate your speedometer for the the 285 wheels? not that is may make a huge difference on the RPMs but it would be good to know since if not, i think your RPMs would be even lower than in the pic at true 70 mph...

 

Yes recalibrated, took a few times but it’s spot on now. The recal made a big diff believe it or not…. Mpg went back up shifting is super smooth and in the correct spots. MPH was 3-4 off. True rpm’s at 70 is 2267 per my scangauge 2

the pic makes it look funny. The needle looks past the 70 mph but it wasn’t from my vantage point and gps had me dead on 70.
I never do over 75 so I’m happy. The truck running in low 2000 rpm’s gets good mpg. It doesn’t go down it maintains or goes up a smidge on longer trips. My taco stays around 18-ish mpg

 

Took my DCLB into my local shop for a full lift/re-gear yesterday.
As of about a week before I dropped it off the shop called and told me that the RadFlo coilovers hadn't even shipped yet, but the 5.29s were at the shop already. No joy on the RadFlo parts as of yesterday.
I dropped the truck off so they could at least get the gears installed.
Picked the truck up this afternoon, and am now 20 or more miles into the break-in riding around with 5.29s and 265/70/16s.
Whooo hoo this thing is a tad torquey!

 

Hope you had them install the ECGS bushing while it’s all apart

Revolution 5.29’s. I got REM and Cryo treatment so no break-in period. Zuk setup the gears and I got the diffs reinstalled yesterday. Truck drives amazing and it was well worth it. I’m on 35” skinnies and speedometer is corrected for reference.

 

Looking for some advise on this pattern.
The gears are brand new

 

Its hard to see, make sure you are adding resistance when rotating the R&P for a clean touch. I would say you to try to go a deeper but hard to tell with how it came out.

 

Might need to thin out the marking compound with some gear oil as well.

 

Heres a photo of my 14bt that I did for my Jeep, this is more just a reference to the contrast between the gear and paint. You want a clear pattern to assess.

 

Thanks for that pic. I was hoping to see a small oval like yours instead the whole tooth is wiped.
I'm putting a.hammer handle in where the axle shaft house in to make some.resistance.

I'll try again when time permits. Thank you guys. The making compound it just paint. So little came in the rebuild kit I was going to use it when I was close.
All the bearings in there are set up ones don't know if that matters. I don't know if there is an order to put everything together I still haven't looked at pinion depth or back lash. Tomarrow is another day.

 

Pattern marking is pretty much the last step which is annoying because if it's off you have to sometimes go all the way back to the beginning. That said this is is after you have thew new bearings, pinion preload, backlash etc completed.

I assume it’s the 8.4” diff. What size is your pinion shim? What is backlash? How much preload on pinion, and how much preload on carrier?

 

The pinion shim is .070 I think
It's an 8" front clamshell from an FJ cruiser
Backlash don't know how yet I have not done that yet. I have the original crush sleeve in there now and I just tightened it up
As for carrier preload. I'm at a complete loss there.
