I'd install the gears now. The worst part about having them installed early is that you might be limited on speed a bit, like 83 mph. Nothing else like the shifting or anything else will matter enough to be a reason to wait, IMO.

Gears installed. Only 160 miles into break in but it drives so much better. Still waiting for my damn VFTuning cable, hasnt even shipped yet, so still on the mild OTT tune for factory gearing.

What all does the 5.29 tune change?

It will take longer if you are not used to working in the garage. The rear can be done in 2-3 hours, double that time frame for the front. It Depends on how quickly you move, if you're alone and your level of analness. Having the correct tools is the biggest time saver.

Revolution only uses Korean made gears. The others are hit or miss. The gear will have a Circle K stamped into. Those are the going to be the best quality available as other are mostly made in China and India. No gears are made in the USA.

Supposedly Nitro are all Circle K too. Which is weird because they have the most whine complaints. FWIW, I went with Revolution because at the time I didn’t know Nitro was also supposed to be Circle K.

I followed Classy's videos and did both front and rear in about 12 hours with plenty of breaks and "wtf meditating" sessions. I've never swapped out 3rd members or clamshells before, but I'm also no stranger to working on vehicles.

I found the front to be easier than expected. I was not able to pop the steering knuckles free, but I still had enough room to pop the axle shafts out. I think the most difficult part was removing the old clamshell as its heavy, and working on jack stands didn't leave a ton of room to muscle it around. Lift the new one into place was surprisingly easy though.

I expected the rear to be really easy, which is was as far as the process, but trying to lift the new 3rd member in was a bitch. I was dead tired after spending all day in the garage in the heat, so muscling it into place took everything I had. I think I laid there for a good 10 minutes after getting it into place haha

One thing to note, my old clamshell had a shield or something around the stub shaft that the new clamshell did not have. (Classy's videos did not have this shown, but it would be where he shows the ARB air line around the stub shaft). The shield or cover or whatever it is pops out easily so I swapped that over to the new clamshell. Unsure if it was needed, but I figure it serves some purpose :notsure:

Gear whine is caused by setup, not the gears themselves.

Yeap , when I went to Premier West in Riverside to regear, they told me Revolution gears and quieter during the break in period but then its all the same. BTW same price as Nitro gears so its just up to you. The shop you go to is more important than the brand of gears. That place has a "no questions asked" warranty as well for like 400

How long were you there or did you drop off your truck? Asking cause I sat there for two and a half hours. People in the thread didn’t believe me.

There really isn’t anything to set up “sloppily.” If the pattern is where it should be and specs are met as far as backlash, pinion preload and carrier preload go, that’s about all that can be done. If you don’t follow torque specs or measure any of the measurable setup specs, and don’t know how to read a pattern, then sure. If you do and there is still noise, then it’s either the gears or just misfortune.

I can hear mine a bit just like I could hear the stock gears. Things are fine. I have set up gears before and the guy who set up my Tacoma did mine perfectly. They still make some noise. I even ran a Zuk Revolution setup briefly and it had about the same amount of noise. Very small amount, but it’s still noise. I don’t run that setup anymore for other reasons, but it’s relevant anyways. Everything’s fine.

That is suspiciously fast. It took my guy all day long and I was helping with the removal and reinstall and some of the parts cleanup/degreasing.

2.5 hours sounds like they simply bolt the gears straight in place while reusing stock shims and send it.

I dunno. I’ve put close to 5k on them and haven’t had any issues.
