I'm still on the stock tires so nothing changed there. Toyota speedometer doesn't take gearing into account. If I recall it calculates speed at the ABS sensor but don't quote me.

When I move to 35s I'll probably use that hypertech thing and re-calibrate the speedo.

I’ve read the same thing how it pulls the speed off the ABS sensor as well, but I’ve also read otherwise.

One thing for sure after I regeared, the odometer doesn’t measure mile increments correctly anymore

790 both diffs...I have an SR5 (8” rear) and 4.88’s but I doubt that’ll create a significant difference in labor costs

How so? Toyota axles have been using 5.29 gears for a very long time with large tires (40+ inches). Our tacomas have a larger rear diff gear making it a bit stronger than previous axles

I think he means the tooth strength. Lower you go in gears the more teeth that are on the ring and the smaller they are. Go to low and you will sheer the teeth under load.

But like you said we have a larger dif

5.29 is the apex for me and my experience so I have no idea what lower gears are like.

It depends where speed sensor is located. In automatics, sensor is located in the front wheel. So, if you change the gears, it doesn't affect. But if you switch to larger tires, it will throw your spedo off.

To the best of my knawwwledge the 3rd gen speed sensor is in the wheels only. Gear ratio does not change the speedo.

    Go Big or go home!!!

I had settled on 33s for a time with my decision making and ultimately was not satisfied with the tire selections for a 33 and really wanted to go 35s. I finally just decided 35s and would figure out the fitment later.

4.88s was the only option available at the time I was looking to buy gears and wanted something lower like 5.29s but they weren't available. I waited long enough to hear a rumor about 5.29s and bought them shortly after they were released.

I think you would be happy with 5.29s, you may find yourself wanting a bit more with the 33s and 4.88s especially if you start adding a ton of weight

    Mostly stuff I built.
I have had 5.29:1 gears in 2 of my Toyota trucks for years. One of them has well over 250k of daily driving on 37” tires on them (locked front and rear). The other is 5700bls of fully caged and armored Crawler on 40s with a 4.3L gm v6 under the hood that gets the snot beaten out of it (locked front, spooled rear). I have yet to have a failure on my 5.29:1 gears. The 5.71:1 gears were problematic in in the truck with 40s so I went back to the 5.29:1 ratio and haven’t looked back.

Good point about the wanting more. It really depends on what I am trying to do with it. I havent done heavy nodding just small stuff here and there. Saving that for when it gets paid off ( hopefully by February) I havent had problems finding 33s with what I am looking for ( mine is a DD and needs a little of everything) but if I can snag some gears for a good price, I'll do it now and wait until I have it paid off, a front locker, suspension, tires, and a little :sawzall:to get it all situated

So something I neglected to test in stock gears was 4Lo.

I tested the speed last night with the 5.29s and 1st gear at 5000 rpm was 9mph..so you guys can check out the stock gears and see what speed you get at 5000 rpms.
