    Hey fellers,

6qts is all that is needed to replace the gear oil when I do the gears right? The front diff and rear diff? The Tcase doesn’t need oil too since it is a different viscosity and unit entirely correct?

6 qts should do it, and you dont have to touch the transfer case.

Below is some fuel data. I will update the second post at the beginning of the thread but I do want to caveat what I learned about the tires and gear combo and fuel economy. As @In4aride mentioned above the truck just does not like certain speeds.

I found anything over 65mph really began to tank the fuel economy. My numbers appear mildly misleading because I ran mostly 75-80 on the way up to Montana and you notice that I average about 16 mpgs during that time. I was learning how the truck performed during this time. Additionally I-25 north into Wyoming and MT is surprisingly very hilly with long steep grades which I think contributed to the mpg loss. Even at those speeds the truck was usually sitting in 5th and occasionally saw 4th and 6th. However on the return trip we set cruise control around 65-70 and took 191 most of the way to I-80 then I-25 and you can see that we averaged about 18.6 mpg.

    Conclusion:
Gears alone will result in about 1-mpg loss. Moving to a 33" will result in an additional 1-2 mpg loss. I have no data for stock gears and 33" or 35" tire.

I would expect someone to get anywhere between 15 - 18.5 mpgs with 5.29s and 33" tires depending on driving habits, load etc. Could be more or less.

I'll also note that I did not fuel up at a specific point each time, I filled up depending on where we were an availability of service stations so some fillups were half a tank, 3/4 tank, etc. However all calculations were based on miles driven and gallons filled.

The Corrected MPGs take into consideration a 7.27% change in tire diameter.

Cool. Aren't you going to 35's? If so I'd like more info on those as well ( if you decide to collect )

Ya I primarily run 35s but they are a very aggressive bias ply tire so I can't ever get any good data. They are pretty much primarily used for offroading and have a max speed of 65 mph. . I did drive them up to Moab for a trip but 1 tank got me just outside moab and the next 3 days or so was 100% offroading.

I was able to drive from Colorado Springs to Fruita which is about 320 miles on a single tank so I was able to get about 17 mpgs on the 35s at 65 mph the whole way but dont have the raw metrics.

I think the mpgs will be very similar, maybe 1 mpg loss but I'm just guessing.

I may try a set of 35" Maxxis Razr radial tires and I can get more data then.

Lots of great real world info here. Looking to make some aggressive mods in the coming months and this is up towards the top.

Do you know how much your wheel/tire combo weighs? And do you have the tune I can’t remember.

17mpg is very good. Waaaay better than mine with 37’s (which weren’t too far off mpg-wise to my 35’s). Granted mine aren’t pumped up like stones as yours are. ;)

No tune but I did get the Toyota TSB if that did anything. I’m not sure on the weight but I can find out.

Appreciate you putting in the time. Felt like I hit a wall with this build for a second.

@JoeCOVA Im very happy to say that I am finally going to be joining the 5.29 crew in the next week or so. I dropped my gears off at our local TW gear guru on Friday. I am also adding the OVTune in the next week or two as well so I think the combination of the two is going to change my truck dramatically for the better!

On another note, lets go wheeling soon!

So I think I’m going to sell my 5.29s. Yukon 5.29, and full setup kits. Located in Lemoore CA if anyone is interested. I’m going to stick with my 4.30s/33s in the auto. I average around 17/18 mpgs with that.

    Hit me up.

Anyone got any vids they can point me to. Would be killer to see some footage of how the vehicle is rolling with new gears at different speeds.

I search YouTube for “Tacoma Nitro” and found a couple of some Youtubers doing their reviews.
I was pumped when I saw one of a guys built rig rolling up a hill at 65/70 still in an overdrive gear.
