It seems to be there all the time but most audible at 40-65 mph I’d say.

Go with a heavier gear oil if it's bothering you. Most aftermarket gears are going to whine, some more than others. Ever heard a Mustang with aftermarket 3.73 gears?

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to ask so please redirect me if I should be asking elsewhere.

I see 4.88s being talked about as the best option for 33" tires and 5.29 gears for guys with 35" tires, does this logic still apply to truck with 33" tires and aftermarket bumpers + added weight?

I'm on stock bumpers but definitely don't want to regear twice when the truck gets a lot heavier over the next year or two.

If you are adding a bunch of weight you will want 5.29s.

Based on my experience I would recommend 4.88 for stock trucks and 5.29 for anything 33+

I have 1000 extra pounds on my truck and the gears make it unnoticeable with 33s or 35s.

I second this having installed 4.88s into 2 stock Tacoma trucks, they feel right on at our 6kft elevation. It was like Toyota should have had them at 4.30 or 4.56 out the gate at a minimum. (talking 3.5l 6speed autos here only).

Good stuff, thanks guys. It sounds like 5.29s are going to be the better option, especially with bumpers and a full bed.

I just received these two yesterday. Going to try and install them tomorrow. 33”s. Light highway driving but a lot of stop and go. I’ll report back after break-in is done. I’m excited.

That's awesome. Looking forward to hearing how you like the 5.29s with 33's.

I’m assuming you got those from ECGS? What is your final cost on those after you send your cores back?

    All the usual things
I put in 5.29s before my trip in May. I am running 33s KO2s. No longer have any issues on gear hunting climbing hills and the responsiveness on the truck is perfect. The Khaya has been all summer and we have not used it much for commuting but just doing camping trips or weekend stuff. Everything is way better than when I was running stock gears. Glad I went with 5.29s. When I was at Overland Expo in Flagstaff I ran into a guy that had a Khaya as well and he had done a 4.88 upgrade and he still had gear hunting issues. His Taco was on display at the Alu-Cab booth.

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
Yup, that’s why I am rolling 5.29s as well

Rear is done. Working on getting the front bolted up to go back in. Taking a breather then back to it.

I drove home, let the diffs cool for a few hours. Then I went back out for another quick drive to get dinner. Another cool down for 45min- 1hr. Then drove back home. Even with the REM finish I rather take it easy on the diffs.

    Initial thoughts:
*The truck feels so much lighter. 1/4 of the way in on the skinny pedal gets me up to speed with ease.

*If my transmission could speak it would be asking me when did I add a 6th gear to it. Previous to 5.29's it was non existent.

*There is a slight and I mean very slight hint of diff howl around 55-60mph. Not a surprise to me with this kind of ratio and I kind of expected it. On my second trip out I took the wife with me. She didn't notice it nor could hear it when I asked her to listen in. Perfect.

*65mph is right around 1900-2000rpm in 6th. I can live with that. Not bad at all.

*From 30-60mph, I can push the gas pedal and the truck actually accelerates in whatever gear its in and I can speed up without much effort.

*No more hunting. Not once. Not even on the over passes and whatever slight uphill grades on the way back. No tow button. No pushing it over to S4.

*I should have done this November 19th, 2017 (the following week after I bought the truck).

I'll put more seat time and give more feedback later on but so far I'm giving this a 10/10.

I enjoy driving this truck now. I feel so stupid for knowing what I know and not doing this sooner.

Thats a great looking rear bumper! C4 fab?
Wow you drove 920 miles to get it installed at ECGS. How many days was the installation?
Anyways where is ECGS? hope they have branch out west?

    What @mcharfauros said...

It didn’t quite take a full day to do the gears. I dropped it off in the morning and picked it up that afternoon. They had the diffs already assembled, so all they had to do was swap mine out.
They’re in Raleigh, NC. As far as I know, that’s their only location.
The total miles for the trip was 2,050 but we spent the rest of the week in Tennessee and had some fun. :D
