Heat shouldn’t be an issue on a properly setup diff after break in.

thanks @JoeCOVA, so I asked the installer if it would be an issue he said it wouldn’t but we went to big bear after about 200miles after the install. The mornings were between 25-35 degrees and I had to engage 4wd to get out of the driveway. Couple times 4h would not engage right away and blink for a min or so. Does that have anything to do with the oil viscosity and cold temps? Or pretty normal

Replace the rear diff oil. ECGS recommends Lucas 85w140 to be used. Run the front diff in 4wd til you meet the 500mile requirement, then change the oil. Make sure that you use new drain n fill plug crush washers.

That's not exactly true. It REALLY depends on the base oil. A lousy viscous base oil, with lots of low cost VI and VII's will absolutely break down rapidly. Also a relatively more viscous oil will get hotter.

I have posted this before but since the topic has come up again here is what ARB recommends for their locking diffs

Heat kills oil. Higher viscous oils such as 85-140 have a wider operating range when it comes to temperatures and thus more forgiving to premature breakdown.

This is why we see oil change intervals for 0w-20 at 10k and 10w-40 at 25k and so on and so forth.

It’s most likely the electronics trying to figure itself out. You just have to roll forward or backward to have it lock in, that’s just Toyota.

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
Finised up the break in, and I must say the truck does drive much better at all speeds. I had no problem rolling hay speeds coming home from my folks down south.
    Loving the gears.

I’m waiting for the next set of rainy days in SoCal to install these. Only problem is I keep going up to the snow to play with my kid. 5:29s :D

I have a 09 dc trd sport. Thinking about going up to 285/75 on the tires. Any reason going 5.29s would be a bad idea? Just got back from a road trip and I was unimpressed how the stock performance was on the high way speeds, hunting for gears, high rpms etc.

2and gen a little different than 3rd. 456 would be good for that tire, then 488 is step up. 529 you would be low n slow.

That's kind of what I was thinking. Definitely happier leaning towards the performance on the 488, as long as it suits my setup nicely. Looking to regain some good acceleration after upsizing the tires.

Depends on what you are after. Jumping from a stock 30.5” tire to a 33” while also regearing to 5.29 will add about 600 rpms at 70mph.

    With a 33” tire on a 2nd gen the difference between 4.88 and 5.29 @ 70mph is only 200rpm

My 2nd gen is on 35's with 4.88's and I think it's the perfect combo. Rpms are higher on the highway, but no downshifting

So I’ve talked to you guys a bit about the break in process and I have yet another question. Please excuse my ignorance. Just swapped out the diff fluid in the rear with 85w-140 Lucas and the plug looked pretty good no metal chunks. I asked my installer if I should do the front he said no. When should I change that out? Any ideas why he would say that? We were communicating thru text and I didn’t hear back. Thanks again.

It is but anywhere from 500-1000 will be just fine. Especially if it was a good install which sounds like yours was with low metal shavings.
