    That's what I was wondering...
I haven't done anything other than changing the PCV.

No, the dealership said they wouldn't do anything under warranty. I planned on maybe trying to dig into the engine over break but I would probably screw things up even more. This mechanic simply put on a PCV valve, if it doesn't fix it then it is internal and I have to make a choice of who does the service.

So I think what I am going to do is rip the air intake out tomorrow and thoroughly clean it. Then, I will put it back together, and set up an appointment at the toyota dealer in cheyenne and see if I can't get them to fix it.

The pcv will help, but you still have issues since only cylinder 4 looked like that. Thats a ton of dirt in your intake tract too which hasnt helped any

I think #4 cylinder being caked in oil is probably the result of nothing else but the PCV going bad. In this diagram you can see how the piping from the PCV in the valve cover elbows right into the #4 intake runner. It stands to reason that #4 would get pretty much all the oily residue.

Wait, so you think the PCV is the only thing that was wrong then?

I my opinion it's very possible. Look how in the diagram the only intake runner that sees any flow from the PCV is the 4th one. And judging by how caked that spark plug was it's also possible the motor was only running on 3 cylinders some of the time.

I am wondering though, why there appeared to be oily residue on the throttle body. The PCV dumps into the intake well downstream of the throttle body so that should not be the cause of oil on the throttle body...

Anyone know if there are any other vents from the crankcase to the intake plumbing? Something after the filter but before the throttle body? I know there's a vacuum line or two that go into the intake tube (b/t throttle body and air box) but I can't recall where they come from. If they come from the crankcase perhaps a small catch can could be installed there in addition to one in the PCV circuit?

I see a lot of maintaining is starting to happen here , good !
I have found that being frugal with my maintenance because I'm low on funds or lazy , forgetful , has cost me much more in time and money than if I would have done it in a timely manner.
I'm not at all insinuating that baby wasn't taken care of , I'm just stressing the point.
One of the guys at Defined Engineering once told me to "Over Maintenance " and have no worries :)

Anyway , I wanted to pass along something I've done with Seafoam.
( haven't done to my taco yet as I'm only at 27k )
On my VW TDI, my tractor with some time on the motor , I noticed the oil being good and black at regular change intervals. When I saw this I wanted to clean up the sump and insides of the motor. I bought my regular 5 qrt's of synthetic that I normally use but also 5 qrt's of the cheapest stuff I could find and 1 can of Seafoam.
I drained my old oil while the engine was warm , then added the cheap oil with the Seafoam right into the crankcase. Waited a few minutes for things to settle then started my engine and let her idle for 10-15 minutes.
Then I dumped that oil and Seafoam combo .... came out dirty and fluid.
I forgot to mention an extra filter too , so .... Old filter - cheap new filter - and new good filter.
After doing this flush , I put all the good regular oil and filter back in as usual.
Even at the next oil change , the dip stk was showing clean oil.
The Seafoam cleaned out all that gunk that accumulates over time.
The whole process didn't take long , pretty painless money wise , and made me feel good about the results.
I only do this every few years ... the dip showing black oil is my indicator.

    Just a FYI

Hope all is well with the baby and you , Happy New Year !!

I am lazy with maintenance but I do it when needed. Certainly not a "crazy" guy but I wish I would have been. Regularly checking my oil would have maybe helped this situation.

The hardest part for me is just starting. I really enjoy doing maintenance but the idea of it makes me cringe. Almost like reading.

Lurking for a bit to see the results.
Bad valve seals or worn guides will result in oil smoke from the tail pipe on a cold startup but the smoke usually stops after a few seconds. Have a buddy check your tailpipe on the next cold startup, or set up a camera.
If it smokes all the time, the rings are fubared, this would have been noticeable to you at this point I'm sure so can prolly rule it out.

The crud in the intake, how is the air filter? almost looks like you have a gap in the intake system or no filter at all. Maybe it's just oil residue...but it looks kind of crusty. Like dirt/mud.

I'm leaning towards the bad PCV valve, way overdue for a tuneup, and might be a good candidate for the oil catch can system.

Those PCV valves, even being so cheap and simple in operation, will cause a lot of grief if they go bad. I would get the OEM valve from the dealer, not a parts store variety. There is a difference.

I wouldn't bother with the dealer just yet, clean the intake up good and keep an eye on the oil level, check the intake once a week and see what happens.

Bought some sea foam. Going to run I through with a new batch of oil and dump it shortly after like a member suggested. I might jump to a heavier oil to prevent leaking.

Going to sell my body for truck parts in an hour.

I think these are going to be purchased for the truck bed pretty soon. I like the design and the lack of a lid. Pretty sure I have a few smaller boxes that can easily fit inside for better organization. A platform will be built over them to allow further storage and another place to lay my head. Two eye bolts and a rope will be installed on each for easy retrieval.

@SconnieHailer How have the BFG's treated you? If I can donate and I stick with it, I should be able to pay most for most of the tires using "free" money by the end of February.
