Do you not put oil back in a container that it could be measured? Thatd give you an idea how much youve lost at least.

And i think you mean valve seals? Seals can be replaced with the head still on the motor. Or its rings, depends how much youre burning. If it starts puffing a lot more when you get on it then i would assume rings. You really should do a compression check or leakdown test to verify anything first. At the least have a mechanic do one so you know what is wrong, before jumping to replace an entire engine

Yep, I am talking about the seals. I have heard valve stem seals, valve guide seals, and valve seals. I am assuming they are all the same as I haven't seen a difference. I have been looking at valve seal replacement and it seems rather simple.

Well you only used valve guide which is a totally different part which would require the head to be removed. Just wanted to make sure

Found this video. May be of some help.

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zFmC66YU6zI

These guys replace valve seals on a dohc Honda engine without removing the head. I didn't know it could be done this way. In the vid the valve cover and cams are already removed. I know it's a Honda but any dohc should at least be similar.

I saw that earlier. Pretty helpful and those guys had me laughing with their commentary. There is also this write up that helped explain the process in more detail.

Right on, man! If you do this job yourself take a few photos for us. I have a 2tr also and I'd love to see inside of it. Also it'd be good reference in case others have this problem.

Pictures will be taken, mostly for reference, but also because I was only able to find one photo of this engine cracked open.

Get one of those Haynes repair manuals. They are awesome. I have one for my truck, a lot of info.

Cleaned up the throttle body today. Took maybe 30 minutes at most. I used the CRC throttle body cleaner and whatever was caked on there came off easily with a spray and a quick wipe.

I am pretty excited to dig into this project. Up to this point I have done everything to my truck and learned a lot. I was going to pay for the work because working on the engine scares me. You have to learn some howthe 2tr-fe is pretty damn basic when you start looking at it. The exact reason I bought this truck was to teach myself the basics that I never had the chance to learn. Hell, I started with learning how to drive stick the day I bought it. Drove it 2 hours home by myself and never had anyone teach me .

I guess there is a chance I may screw up but it can't get much worse than it is now.

Ok, question! Valve seals are $15 a piece through toyota. I believe there are 16 total (coming to ~$240). The parts guy told me he hates passing up a sale but I should probably go to napa and go aftermarket as he has had good look on his own vehicles. Is it worth paying for OEM or should I try out aftermarket and save some money? Or, should I wait until I open the engine and have time to inspect the seals. And only replace the ones that are bad?

I ordered a new cover and throttle body gasket to replace just for good measure.

On one hand, I am upset the dealership has even questioned my warranty with an engine at 50,000 miles but they always seem to be very helpful in the parts department. He showed me the diagrams and what needs to be done on the computer. He said it was a pretty basic job and as long as you take your time, it is pretty easy.

If it were me I'd go oem, just to be sure. Usually oem stuff is best. There are lots of 2trs with lots of miles on them, which is a testament to the quality of oem parts.

Well, I ordered felpro valve seals. $40 for the complete set...vs toyota at $220 for a small piece of rubber. Lots of people use and have good things to say about felpro so I feel alright going this route. I can pick them up tomorrow when they arrive at the parts store. If the cost was within $50 I probably would have went OEM but I am not paying the outrageous price they are asking.

Pretty much how a dealership makes its money , not to mention the cash Toyota is making. There's not much mark up on the original purchase , it's the parts and service that bring in the cash !
There are many accidents needing parts , I checked on the price of my 2013's cheap , low light fogs .... $192.oo fore 1 .... ONE !! Geez !
Anyway , that's how the big bucks are made .

You have me wondering Why .... No Warranty ? 50,000 miles ?

This endeavor is more into the advanced stage of learning :D
