Well, in light of the postings and photos this afternoon/evening (depending on your time zone, of course) i confess to a certain degree of inadequacy as I bring forth my post snow-mageddan libation....In my miserable defence the thread DOES say "what are you drinking?"

And it IS about beer....even if that beer forces you to drink something else

One of the chaps in the last couple days mentioned his beer from South Korea....i have to agree, whatever good things that South Korea has to offer, beer is not at the top of the list...I was there last year and tried pretty much everything; Cass, OB Lager, all the offerings from Hite...the Hite Stout was not bad, the rest...well, that might be why I strayed out of the beer realm.

Milkis is essentially yogurt soda pop...put sweet yogurt into soda water and you have...Milkis...or one of it's competitors.

Soju - and there are a million different ones, from the US$1/16 oz up to where prices would make single malt look cheap

Together, you have the most popular drink on the Korean Peninsula, and what you drink when you can't possibly choke down another Lotte Chilsung

I was really happy to get back to Hong Kong and have a San Miguel

I make soju as a home brewer and I’m a big fan.

I haven’t actually tried any commercial stuff so... might be shit.

Taste good though.

 

I hadn't thought about brewing it, but you may have inspired me....I do my own wine and beers, so it shouldn't be too much of a stretch

We can buy soju here (it IS Vancouver, after all....LOL) but after it being almost free in Seoul, I decline the inflated prices here just on principle

This bottle came back with me last year, and milkis came from the local Hong Kong supermarket....it is better as a summer drink, methinks

 

I went to a Asian food grocery and bought “rice balls”. I had a hard time finding them because they’re marketed as like a snack food I think.

Basically its a white fungus and high alcohol tolerant yeast.

Mix it in with some steamed rice and the fungus will break down the rice into simple sugars and the yeast will convert to alcohol.

Super easy to make. It took me a few try’s to make something that didn’t taste like buttery sake but pretty simple otherwise.

I am familiar with the rice balls....I live in a 'culturally diverse' household, LOL (my wife is from Hong Hong) and the Asian groceries are considered normal....what the hell is a 'Safeway'??? LOL

Its a definite keeper. Ive only had this and one other flavor from Collective Arts and was impressed with both.

I’d be real curious to see how home brewed soju is. This is what I had last night and the flavor seemed weak to me. At 17% there’s an alcohol taste but not much more than that.

 

Collective Arts has some awesome beers. Up in the clouds or life in the clouds or whatever it’s called was one of my favorites
