Agreed on Modern Times, but I'd pick Ballast Point over Stone any day (other than the constellation ownership, I like their beers. Lately Stone just blows). While we're on it, 10 barrel is a ABInbev brand. Never tried it though.

Ballast Point Sculpin and Lagunitas IPA are your best bet for distribution near you, both are different styles of west coast. Sculpin is more west coast: Bitterness, resin and a light crisp feel. Lagunitas is much more malty but super hoppy, dare I say "Dank"

Thanks for the recommendation. Generally speaking is there like a quintessential golden standard West Coast IPA? I think I read or heard somewhere that Deschutes was one of the first popular ones.

Stone just doesn't do anything new and exciting. All their beers are good though. Not great, but not bad. Just good. I'd still rather support Stone than ballast. He can disregard my comment on 10 Barrel, I thought I had heard of it before but haven't been there either. He should just go to Modern Times and call it a day. I'd do Belching Beaver and Pizza Port too if time allowed.

@Sworksrider I changed my mind. Go to Modern Times and Pizza Port - Ocean Beach. It's also close to the airport. Pizza Port is killer, probably 2nd/3rd best in San Diego. Belching Beaver is also next to Pizza Port. I should have looked at that better yesterday.

Not sure. I don't think so though. Pizza Port has got pizza and beer though. Love their pizza and beer, can never go wrong with a trip to PP

I'm not sure what Deschutes it would be really, fresh squeezed is an old standby. Everyone has their own idea of a West Coast IPA, but generally, its got IBUs off the scale, generally lighter on the malt character and lots of citrus, pine, resin from the hops. Bear Republic Racer 5, Pliny, Sculpin, and I'm sure a bunch more i'm forgetting from the mid-level places, plus thousands on the regional level that you likely won't see. Sculpin is just something I know you can find out there for the style, and it's pretty damn good.

Ya, I just havent had anything from Stone in a year or so that excites me, but i'm not a big IPA guy, save for the occasional Hazy. Pure Project is super good, but not close enough to bother really mentioning. Agreed, pizza port is a So Cal staple, but Modern times is great place to get awesome non-distro goods.

If they have coffee, try some. Their coldbrew slushie is amazing.

I'd say he should just go to Modern Times, but seems like he's looking for food and I'm pretty sure they don't do food besides maybe like snacks or something like that. Pizza Port always has really good non-canned beers on tap though. Honestly I think I'd rather go to Pizza Port over Modern Times, but I'm also hungry right now and want a pizza

I've only been to PP once, after a day of beer touring, so I may have been burned out. Who knows.

Tomorrow, the 30ish days of no booze is done. Hitting up Modern Times and Mikkeller in DTLA before a Kings game.

Finally got a bottle of the Funky Buddha Maple Bacon Coffee Porter. It was pretty tasty, but not sure it was worth $16 for a bomber... 3 Taverns in Atl does a Morning Smack milk stout that is very similar... But at $15 a 6 pack, I like it much better!

Also had some of this Evil Twin Grand Cru... FREAKING DELICIOUS! Maple bourbon barrel aged stout and barleywine blend! $7 per tall boy is the only negative thing I can say about it!
