Not bad. Not as sticky sweet as other pastry stouts, by a long shot. All the TS stouts have this little bit of some kind of flavor I can always notice, but I don't quite know what it is...

Courtesy of Strangefellows Brewing in East Van....and a nod to the local Asian influence.

Not that it is a hard thing to do (especially with the 49th Parallel actually closed, for the first time in modern history), but I'm committing to supporting only local (British Columbia) breweries for a bit...it caught me by surprise to find out that the local cottage brewery industry is suffering, and we are going to lose a bunch of them...as much as I ( and a good number of other folks) have actually (dramatically) increased our ETOH intake these past couple months, and as much as bottle/can/growler sales are way up, due the closure of pubs and restaurants, the local brewers are suffering. A Lot.

Fear not, I will continue to do my part.

This one lives up to its name, spicy, like Szechuan cuisine....amazingly crisp and refreshing on the very first hot sunny day we've had since 2019, like a nice, full-bodied, tart lemonade that kicks ya in the arse.

And a perfect end to a good to fair day building a shed.

Building the sub floor and foundation was the easy part. 2 X 6s and screws and chemically treated toxic plywood. Pretty sure the reason I don't have Covid 19 is all the preservatives and bug killer sawdust I inhaled.

Putting together the pre-fab kit....well, that was more interesting.

It is an overseas product, made in the middle east, so the engineering is sound, the quality is excellent, and the sample looked AWESOME in the Home Depot parking lot.

As per the enclosed multi-lingual instruction manual, I looked 'em up on YouTube and a very attractive buxom Israeli girl in a bikini top and Daisy Duke shorts assured me that she put it together single-handedly, and any guy who could not emulate her was unworthy of her attentions. (okay, I may have extrapolated that last part)sf2.jpg sf1.jpg

Clearly she is much smarter than I am.

Or maybe I need another saison and need to watch the video again

Brewed my @relkins0413 English Pale Ale/ESB whatever you want to call it this evening...

    20200507_185704.jpg

    20200507_204227.jpg

I finished the boil with about .3 gallons too much volume, so my OG was a bit on the low side (1.044 vs 1.046). I also upped the mash temp a bit so it would finish around 1.015 instead of 1.012 per the original recipe. If it finishes at 1.015 as planned, it'll be a whopping 3.8% ABV brew! I wanted it to finish high as I plan to brew a dry English Stout in a couple weeks to have the makings for some homebrew Black and Tans on tap. The FG of the "tan" needs to be a good 5-6 points higher than the "black" to maintain decent separation in the glass.

Drinking my American Stout this evening as well...

According to BeerSmith, the stats put it at a Best Bitter. Other than the higher mash temp, you’re probably more on track as to where the gravities need to be. I believe I overshot a bit when I brewed mine. I think I ended up adding too much of the Golden Syrup so I ended up with a little above 5% abv where I was hoping to get below 5.

When yours is done, I’d love to do a side by side.

Sounds about right. I actually used the Best Bitter style profile in Beersmith when I put the recipe together and my actual numbers seem to be in line. FG is in the yellow at the high end and %ABV is in the yellow at the low end. Maybe it will finish a little lower than expected and bump up the alky-hawl a smidge. We shall see. Pretty sure this is the smallest beer I've ever brewed!

Definitely down for a side by side.

Not usually a fan of coconut flavored things but this one works. Maybe cause it's fairly subtle.
